TSMC is currently building a semiconductor factory (factory 1) in Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, and is expected to start production in December 2024.

TSMC is also interested in building a second semiconductor factory in Japan (referred to as Factory 2), and the Japanese government is considering providing subsidies of up to 900 billion yen for the second factory.

At the “Public-Private Cooperation Forum to Increase Domestic Investment” held on October 4, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida finalized a new round of economic stimulus plan. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will use a budget of 3.4 trillion yen to establish three funds to support semiconductor production and research and development.

It is learned from reports that the three financial supports are the “Post-5G Information Communication System Enhanced Infrastructure R&D Project”, the “Specific Semiconductor Funding Plan” and the “Ensuring Stable Supply Support Fund”.

The Asahi Shimbun reported that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry believes it is necessary to provide 900 billion yen (currently about 44.1 billion yuan) in subsidies to TSMC’s second factory. In addition, it will provide 600 billion yen (currently about 44.1 billion yuan) to the “Japanese national team” Rapidus. 29.4 billion yuan) subsidies, providing 700 billion yen (currently about 34.3 billion yuan) for traditional chip industries such as Sony CMOS sensors.

Singapore-based Silicon Box opened a new $2 billion (Note: currently about 14.36 billion CNY) advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant in Singapore this week, seeking to expand the application of “Chiplet” technology.

The two-year-old start-up said in its statement that the 73,000-square-meter factory will be supported by Singapore’s Economic Development Board and create more than 1,000 jobs.

According to public information, Silicon Box was co-founded by Sehat Sutardja, founder of American chipmaker Marvell, his wife Weili Dai, and current CEO BJ Han.

The company focuses on “Chiplet” chiplet technology, which can package chips the size of a grain of sand together, and can be used in everything from data centers to home appliances.

In recent years, as chip manufacturing costs have soared, the global chip industry has increasingly turned to “chiplet” technology to make transistors small enough to be measured in atoms.

Chief executive BJ Han said “customers were already lining up” even before the factory opened, with a flood of artificial intelligence companies driving demand. They are said to be in talks with Tenstorrent, a Canadian AI startup, for a supply.

According to the report, TSMC will join hands with Bosch (the world’s largest automotive parts company and home appliance manufacturer), Infineon and NXP to build a new factory in Germany with a total investment of up to 10 billion euros, which will be the second largest overseas investment project in TSMC’s history.

The report noted that TSMC wants the German side to inject 5 billion euros in construction funds for the investment project. Bloomberg said TSMC is still working with its three major partners to discuss the exact amount of the subsidy with the German government, but the amount of the subsidy could still change before the German government makes a final decision.

The source pointed out that there are voices within the German government who believe that they should wait for TSMC factories to be completed before establishing the subsidy amount based on the actual situation.

It is learned that TSMC, according to Japan’s Ministry of Economy and Trade on TSMC Kumamoto plant subsidies, also requested that the government should subsidize half of the new factory in Germany. A spokesman for the German Ministry of Economic Affairs also told the media that discussions are underway with TSMC, but neither side has specified more details.

Sony will build a new semiconductor plant in Thailand to produce image sensors for vehicles, shifting labor-intensive work from Japan to Thailand and controlling production costs by spreading its production base around the world, while also creating a semiconductor supply chain that can respond to emergencies, according to the Nikkei News.

Sony will invest about 10 billion yen (about 510 million yuan) to build a new building at its production site in central Thailand, according to the report. Work is already underway, and the plant will begin operations in the fiscal year ending March 2025.

The new plant will be responsible for manufacturing a new image sensor, but unlike the common IMX766 such Exmor, the new line focuses on automotive chips designed for self-driving cars to identify pedestrians and obstacles.

Once completed, Sony’s production scale in Thailand will directly increase to 170% of the original, and the company will also employ 2,000 people to work in the plant.

Nikkei pointed out that Sony’s front-end process on wafers, a key component of semiconductors, will be completed in Japan, while the factory in Thailand will only be responsible for the back-end processing, making the wafers into thin chips, and the final product made will be exported worldwide.

Sony currently handles most of the front-end and back-end processes for automotive sensors in its Japanese factories, and the company now appears to be planning to focus its Japanese efforts on front-end processing and let its Thai operations take over the rest.
