Singapore-based Silicon Box opened a new $2 billion (Note: currently about 14.36 billion CNY) advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant in Singapore this week, seeking to expand the application of “Chiplet” technology.
The two-year-old start-up said in its statement that the 73,000-square-meter factory will be supported by Singapore’s Economic Development Board and create more than 1,000 jobs.
According to public information, Silicon Box was co-founded by Sehat Sutardja, founder of American chipmaker Marvell, his wife Weili Dai, and current CEO BJ Han.
The company focuses on “Chiplet” chiplet technology, which can package chips the size of a grain of sand together, and can be used in everything from data centers to home appliances.
In recent years, as chip manufacturing costs have soared, the global chip industry has increasingly turned to “chiplet” technology to make transistors small enough to be measured in atoms.
Chief executive BJ Han said “customers were already lining up” even before the factory opened, with a flood of artificial intelligence companies driving demand. They are said to be in talks with Tenstorrent, a Canadian AI startup, for a supply.
