TSMC is currently building a semiconductor factory (factory 1) in Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, and is expected to start production in December 2024.
TSMC is also interested in building a second semiconductor factory in Japan (referred to as Factory 2), and the Japanese government is considering providing subsidies of up to 900 billion yen for the second factory.
At the “Public-Private Cooperation Forum to Increase Domestic Investment” held on October 4, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida finalized a new round of economic stimulus plan. The Asahi Shimbun reported that Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry believes it is necessary to provide 900 billion yen (currently about 44.1 billion yuan) in subsidies to TSMC’s second factory.
