There are a number of cases of Samsung Galaxy series phone screen failure. Almost all of the affected phones have Super AMOLED screens and green or pink lines automatically appear on the screen. Samsung recently announced that out-of-warranty Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 series phones can be repaired for free if this problem occurs. However, it is noted that these aren’t the only devices affected by the screen issue, as some Galaxy Z Flip 4 owners have also reported experiencing a similar situation.

A Galaxy Z Flip 4 user from India is claiming that his phone has developed a screen fault less than five months after purchase, with a green line appearing in the top left corner of the foldable-screen handset, Sammobile reports.

The user claimed that the phone had not suffered any physical damage and that the green line appeared suddenly and looked like a hardware issue on Samsung’s part. When the user contacted the service center, the after-sales staff told him that the screen is not covered under warranty, however, we all know that the screen comes with a warranty. The service center refused to replace the damaged screen for free for this Galaxy Z Flip 4 user and when the user tried to contact Samsung via Twitter, he didn’t receive any response from the company’s social media team either.

The site states that Samsung needs to clearly communicate with its after-sales service network about how to deal with the issue of screens that appear to have green/pink lines, and must also extend its free repair policy to the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S22, and Galaxy Z series phones. If Samsung unreasonably refuses to replace the screens of the affected Galaxy phones, it is likely to ruin its hard-earned reputation, especially among users who have been loyal to Samsung and spent a lot of money on high-end handsets like the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Strategy Analytics reported that global folding screen smartphone shipments climbed to a high double-digit level in Q3 2022 amid global geopolitical and economic turmoil. The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series devices are the main reason for the explosive growth in the third quarter of 2022.

Folding screen devices are still a niche segment, but shipments are steadily growing. Samsung holds the absolute lead, followed by Huawei and Xiaomi. Asia-pacific accounted for more than one-third of folding screen smartphone shipments in Q3 2022.

According to CINNO Research, from the domestic market share, Huawei’s market share in the third quarter of 2022 accounted for more than half of 53.2%, although down 5.1 percentage points year-on-year, still leading the domestic folding phone market; Samsung’s market share of 20.5%, down 16.1 percentage points; Xiaomi market share of 9.0%, up 5.8 percentage points Xiaomi’s market share was 9.0%, up 5.8 percentage points year-on-year, jumping to third place, mainly due to the listing of its new generation folding phone product MIX Fold2; Vivo, OPPO and Glory’s market share increased from none to 7.7%, 4.6% and 3.1% respectively.

DSCC’s latest report shows that previously expected the fourth quarter of 2022 foldable panel shipments of 5.4 million, but now see the possible results will be 2.9 million, a decrease of 46%.

The report notes that foldable panel shipments are expected to fall 54 percent sequentially and 26 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2022. Sales of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 have slowed accordingly. iPhone 14 series has taken away some of the attention and sales, while the Z Fold 4’s on-sale price of $1,799 is still too high in the current economic climate.

The DSCC says the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are expected to see year-over-year declines in the fourth quarter compared to their predecessors, but the third quarter is up year-over-year, and thus still relatively up for the entire year of 2022.

DSCC also expects 13.2 million foldable smartphone terminals to be shipped, compared to 15.3 million previously expected, due to weak overall market demand in the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to foreign media reports, Apple launched the iPhone 14 / Pro series of smartphones in the early hours of September 8, although in some countries at 8 pm the next day began to accept reservations, 16 began to ship but have not yet started some countries sales, South Korea is one of them.

Information on Apple’s Korean website shows that the iPhone 14 series will be available for pre-order by Korean users from 30 September, this Friday, with shipping starting on 7 October.

While Samsung has a clear advantage in the Korean smartphone market, Apple’s iPhone, which is the dominant player in the global high-end smartphone market, is bound to attract a large number of consumers when it enters the Korean market, competing with Samsung’s high-end models.

Reports in the Korean media have also revealed that two of the country’s major telecoms operators have increased their subsidies for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 on the eve of the iPhone 14 going on sale in Korea. Industry observers believe that the increase in subsidies by the two telecom operators is a means of increasing the competitiveness of Samsung’s smartphone as the high-end model is set to compete with Apple’s iPhone 14 in South Korea.

According to reports in the Korean media, it is SK Telecom and KT, the former being the number one telecom operator in Korea and the latter being the second largest telecom operator in the country, who are raising the subsidy for the purchase of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

For the 512GB version of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, SK Telecom previously offered a subsidy of 280,000-520,000 won, which has now been increased to 380,000-520,000 won, while KT previously offered a subsidy of 255,000-650,000 won, which has now been increased to a minimum of 265,000 won.

On August 10 this year, Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 folding screen phone, both phones are equipped with Snapdragon 8 + Gen 1 chip, with a country starting price of RMB 12,999 and RMB 7499 respectively. Samsung Europe Chief Marketing Officer Benjamin Braun previously said at IFA 2022 that shipments of the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 “doubled” in mainland Europe compared to the previous models (i.e. Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3).

According to SAMMOBILE today, citing TheElec, Samsung aims to achieve a total sales of 15 million units of all its folding screen phones by the end of this year. But Noh Geun-chang, head of Hyundai Motor Securities Research Center, said a conservative estimate puts Samsung’s total sales of folding screen phones at about 10 million this year, with the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 folding screen phones selling about 8 million units.

Compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3 / Flip3 folding screen phone sales of 7.1 million units over the same period last year, the forecasted Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 folding screen phone sales achieved a 13% increase but did not achieve Samsung’s shipment target for this year. According to the report, this situation is mainly related to the global economic situation, rather than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 folding screen phone product problems.

Data analyst Omdia said before the release of the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 folding screen phone that Samsung will ship 11 million Galaxy Z Fold 4 / Flip 4 folding screen phones by the end of this year. Together with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 / Flip 3 and other folding screen products, Samsung will ship 13 million folding screen phones this year.

Sources say Samsung hopes to set its foldable device shipments at 15 million units this year with the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. However, the latest industry estimates show that Samsung may not be able to achieve this goal within the year.

Current industry estimates put total Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 shipments at 8 million units, which still represents a significant 13% increase compared to last year’s 7.1 million unit shipments. The forecast was made by Noh Geun-chang, who heads the Hyundai Motor Securities Research Center.

He said that including previous devices such as the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung will ship 10 million units for the full year 2022. Samsung may have revised its target based on market reaction and the broader economic situation. TM Roh, head of its mobile business, mentioned the new foldable devices at the Galaxy Unpacked event, where the company expects to sell more than 10 million foldable devices by 2022.

Samsung shows the waterproof test of the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 folding screen phone. In addition to spraying the Galaxy Z Fold4 with a water gun, Samsung also put the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4 in a half-folded state underwater to observe its waterproof performance.

SLASH GEAR reported on August 16 that Samsung abandoned the water-drop hinge solution and adopted a traditional hinge design in order to provide IPX8 level water resistance to the Galaxy Z Fold4 / Flip4.
