Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 + phone users’ feedback that the camera application has a bug, in the photos taken, there will be a similar ring-shaped blurred area.

Samsung community moderators recently responded to user feedback, translated as follows:

"This is a feature of the sensor and lens that enables a depth-of-field effect similar to that of a DSLR camera. If the user shoots macro and wants all areas of the picture to show clear details, it is recommended to use digital zoom to reasonably adjust the distance between the lens and the subject."

According to a survey in a German forum, only 7 out of 71 users were not affected by this problem. Another survey on an Italian forum showed that 17 out of 25 users had the problem.

Some problematic samples were taken by Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ phones:

Samsung in the recently released flagship Galaxy S23 series models, in addition to the existing power-saving mode (reduce screen brightness, CPU speed limit to 70%), also the performance mode subdivided into Standard and Light two modes.

According to the description on the page, Standard mode is “a balance of processing speed, battery life and heat dissipation to provide recommended output”. The Light mode “prioritizes battery life and heat dissipation over processing speed”.

In Golden Reviewer’s tests, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s Cortex-X3 core dropped from a clock speed of 3.36 GHz to 2.84 GHz when switching from Standard to Light.

The performance of the Prime core also decreases, from 60.86 points in SPECint06 Big Core to 55.12. Power consumption drops from 4.90 W to 2.97 W.

The above figures show that Samsung’s Light mode is 90% of Standard performance, significantly improving the Galaxy S23’s battery life.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s performance score in Light mode drops by 15 percent.

Standard mode single-core score of 1604, a multi-core score of 5311

Light mode single-core score of 1377 points, multi-core score of 4896 points

From the score, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series will have 10-15% less performance when the Light mode is turned on, thus improving efficiency and extending battery life. Even in Light mode, the Galaxy S23 series still outperforms Android phones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Recently, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series was officially released, the series is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 mobile platform, and there is no Exynos version. At the same time, the S23 series equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen2 is an exclusive custom version, not only has a higher frequency but is also named Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.

Although theoretically overclocking is a good thing, this exclusive custom version has caused some users to worry, whether it is TSMC OEM or Samsung OEM has become the focus of the conversation.

Today, Qualcomm finally responded positively to user questions, saying that this custom version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is still using TSMC 4nm process, rather than Samsung’s own OEM production.

This answer, no doubt, allows users who have experienced serious heat problems caused by the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Samsung OEM, to breathe a long sigh of relief.

The S23’s custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU is said to be clocked at 3.36GHz, higher than the 3.2GHz standard version, and the GPU frequency is 719MHz, also higher than the 680MHz of the standard version.

This gives the Galaxy S23 series a Geekbench 5 single-core score of 1583, compared to the standard version of the second-generation Snapdragon 8 with a single-core score of around 1480 and the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 with a single-core score of between 1400-1500.

Google Fi has announced that it is adding eSIM support to some Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Support for Google Fi eSIM was first introduced when the Google Pixel 2 series was purchased through Fi. Later, Google Fi support was extended to the Pixel 3 and 3a phones. Then, in the Pixel 4 series, all Pixel devices supported Google Fi eSIM.

In fact, even the Pixel Watch supports Google Fi eSIM, but previously Google Fi eSIM was limited to Pixel devices. Now, in a new support page, Google Fi has confirmed that eSIM support will be available for some Samsung Galaxy devices. Note that in order to use Google Fi eSIM, Samsung Galaxy phones need to be running Android 13 (One UI 5.0 or newer).

At the top of the list is the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S23 series. Here is the full list of Galaxy smartphones that support Google Fi.

  • Galaxy S23
  • Galaxy S23+
  • Galaxy S23 Ultra
  • Galaxy S22
  • Galaxy S22+
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • Galaxy S21
  • Galaxy S21+
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra
  • Galaxy S20
  • Galaxy S20+
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra
  • Galaxy Note 20
  • Galaxy Note20 Ultra

Google Fi subscribers with any of the above Samsung Galaxy devices will no longer need to rely on a physical SIM card, users can easily set up a Google Fi eSIM by connecting their Galaxy device to Wi-Fi, going to the Play Store and downloading the Google Fi app. Sign in with the Google account used for Google Fi. When asked to activate Google Fi, click the Continue button.

It is not clear if Google Fi eSIM support will be extended to more Samsung devices in the future. Also, for some reason, the Galaxy Z Fold3 is not yet supported in the Google Fi eSIM list.
