Recently, we learned from foreign media that regarding the European Union’s launch of a countervailing investigation into Chinese electric vehicles, Group Renault CEO Luca de Meo expressed his opinion, saying that “the door is completely closed to China would be the worst possible response.”

The European auto industry is grappling with slowing sales of electric vehicles in Europe. Carmakers have invested heavily in producing electric vehicles, but they are expensive for European consumers. Competition from cheaper Chinese electric cars is also a concern. The EU has launched a countervailing investigation into Chinese cars and is considering raising import tariffs.

De Meo declined to comment on the tariffs, sources said. Europe must protect its market during the transition to electric vehicles while finding a place for Chinese rivals. One of the reasons is that Europe’s automakers can Learn from China, which is leading the industry. “If we want to accelerate the adoption of electric cars in Europe, we need to work with the Chinese and find ways to deal with them,” de Meo said.

De Meo said that these methods may encourage Chinese automakers in Europe to cooperate with European suppliers, or encourage Chinese suppliers to set up branches in Europe, similar to China’s policies towards overseas automakers. De Meo said that “closing the door completely on (China) would be the worst response.” De Meo also called on the EU to fund electric vehicle subsidies and raw materials, as well as infrastructure plans to counter fierce competition from China. In addition, Mercedes-Benz CEO Källenius previously stated that he believes tariffs should be cut and that increased competition will help the European auto industry produce better cars.

Groupe Renault announced that considering the current downturn in the stock market, the group decided to cancel the IPO process of Ampere.

Renault stressed that it had enough cash even without an IPO and that the group would continue to fund Ampere’s development until it reached breakeven in 2025. This decision has no impact on Groupe Renault’s financial guidance and capital allocation strategy.

“Today, we have made a pragmatic decision. We are all focused on executing our strategy and delivering better results that create value for all stakeholders.”

Groupe Renault said the entire Ampere team will execute its electric vehicle and software strategy, with a clear roadmap in place to significantly reduce the cost of electric vehicles by 40% within one product generation.

The company announced as early as 2022 that it planned to conduct an IPO of Ampere in the first half of 2024, but late last year stated that it would cancel it if the valuation was too low.

Luca de Meo, CEO of Groupe Renault and Ampere, previously said that the value of the IPO may be as high as 10 billion euros.

In December, Renault alliance partners Nissan and Mitsubishi announced they would invest in Ampere. Renault stressed that the companies were interested in investing in Ampere even without an IPO. Qualcomm is also expected to invest in Ampere, but its investment is contingent on the IPO proceeding.

Renault Group Chief Financial Officer Thierry Piéton said that after canceling the IPO process of its electric vehicle subsidiary Ampere, Renault will discuss the latter’s investment plan for Ampere with Nissan.

“Nissan has stated that it is interested in potential investment opportunities regardless of whether Ampere IPOs or not… This has been taken into account in the contract between the parties and there is an agreement that allows Nissan to invest regardless of whether Ampere IPOs or not.”

According to overseas media reports, Renault is selling about 5% of Nissan’s shares for 765 million euros as part of Nissan’s share buyback plan.

This move is another step after Renault finally decided to reduce its stake in Nissan last month. Renault said on December 12 that the share sale was worth about 765 million euros (about 824 million U.S. dollars), but Renault would suffer a capital loss of 1.5 billion euros.

Nissan will repurchase the shares at 568.5 yen per share, which was Nissan’s stock price when the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed on December 12. Although Nissan’s share price has risen 36% this year, its current market value is only half of what it was at the beginning of 2017.

The two automakers ultimately aim to adjust their mutual shareholding ratio to 15%, thus resetting the previous decade-long automaking alliance. The partnership between Nissan and Renault took a major hit in 2018 due to the arrest of former chairman Carlos Ghosn. Since then, the two companies have drifted apart and developed their own development plans.

Funds from the sale of Renault’s stake in Nissan will support Chief Executive Luca de Meo’s push to develop Renault’s electric vehicle and software unit Ampere. He plans to spin off the unit and take it public as an independent entity in April or May 2024. Nissan also agreed to invest in Ampere.

Recently, we obtained a set of patent drawings of Renault 5 E-Tech from foreign media. The car is positioned as a small hatchback and uses pure electric drive. Its WLTP pure electric cruising range will reach 400km. This car will become the successor of Renault ZOE in the future and is expected to be released at the Geneva Motor Show on February 26, 2024. In the future, Renault’s high-performance division Alpine may build a high-performance version of the car based on this car.

In terms of appearance, it can be seen that the new car continues the design style of the concept car, but the LED light source structure inside the headlight group has been adjusted. The square LED daytime running lights have also been changed to a style with four corners lit, and a red one in the middle. The “5” logo is more recognizable overall. The illuminated RENAULT letters under the front of the concept car are not expected to be retained, but an air intake will be installed. In addition, according to previous preview images, the engine hood is equipped with a charging status display. When the battery is full, the display will display the complete number “5”.

Looking from the side of the body, the car is only 3.92 meters long, making it appear relatively short and compact. There is a charging socket behind the front wheel, and the rear door handle is hidden in front of the C-pillar. A strip of red decoration on the roof extends from the rearview mirror to the rear spoiler, adding a bit of vitality to the entire car. The overall shape of the rims also continues the design on the concept car, but it does not look so exaggerated and the size has also been reduced.

The rear of the car follows the H-shaped through-type taillight design from the concept car. However, according to previous preview images, the middle part is only for decoration and cannot be lit. It is equipped with the number 5 logo. It is reported that the car does not use a dedicated electric vehicle platform, but is based on the Renault Clio. The two cars share about 70% of their parts. In the future, the car will be equipped with a multi-link rear suspension, which is relatively rare among French hatchbacks and will bring better handling.

In terms of power, the car will be driven by pure electric power, but the specific power parameters have not been announced. According to previous news, the car will be equipped with a battery with a capacity of 52.0kWh and a WLTP cruising range of approximately 400km. An entry-level model equipped with a 40.0kWh battery may be launched in the future. We will continue to pay attention to more news about new cars.

After unveiling plans for the 2027 Renault Alpine, Groupe Renault has unveiled a new design center: Renault Design Center Latin America.

The new design center is located in the Ayrton Senna Industrial Park in Curitiba (Brazil) and will be responsible for developing concepts and models for the Brazilian and Latin American markets. As of now, Groupe Renault has five design centers around the world to help it design future vehicles.

Groupe Renault has inaugurated the Renault Design Center Latin America in the Ayrton Senna complex in São José dos Pijas (Curitiba, Brazil). This new design center, located close to the Group’s three plants, will provide Renault with modern tools to design vehicles for the Latin American market and will also enable local designers to participate in Renault’s global creative projects alongside four other design centers.

Groupe Renault has had a design office in São Paulo since 2006. With the new facilities at the Renault Design Center Latin America, the designers now have a 1220 m2 design center dedicated to creating products from their origins, through to the creative and conceptual stages of the model.

  • Indoor showroom design: Interactive model and prototype evaluation room with 360° rotating platform and 216-inch HD screen for demonstration, modelling and analysis of 1:1 scale 3D vehicles.
  • Outdoor showroom design: 500 square meters of outdoor space with confidential isolation that allows models and prototypes to be evaluated in daylight from different angles and distances and helps with the selection of colours and patterns.
  • Model Studio: A space dedicated to developing physical prototypes at different scales, transforming 2D designs into 3D designs.
  • Virtual Reality Studio: Visualize creative proposals in “real-time” in 3D and HD
  • Creative Lounge: An open space designed to facilitate interaction and brainstorming between teams to create concepts and develop projects.

Brazilian designers have contributed to the development of the Renault Kardian, which will go on sale in 2024. They were also involved in the development of the Renault Niagara concept car, which heralds a future production model due to be launched outside Europe in 2027.

It is worth mentioning that the Renault Kardian is mainly developed for the South American market and is expected to be launched in Brazil first, based on the CMF modular platform.

The Kardian features split headlights, thick front and rear bumpers and Renault’s signature double-layered grille; the taillights feature a C-shaped design, and higher-spec versions come with alloy wheels, roof rails, a shark fin antenna and additional chrome parts.

The new car is equipped with an 8-inch central control screen and a four-spoke steering wheel. It is equipped with a new 1.0L turbo gasoline engine, matched with a six-speed DCT automatic transmission, with a maximum power of 125 horsepower and a peak torque of 220 Nm.
