The well-known single-board computer Raspberry Pi (Raspberry Pi) has been widely welcomed for its cheap and ease to get, however, in recent years the Raspberry Pi has been facing supply shortages, hundreds of thousands of Raspberry Pi are produced every month most Raspberry Pi has been snatched up by commercial buyers, retailers and end-users are difficult to buy. Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton has repeatedly said that 2023 will be a “recovery year” for Raspberry Pi supply.

Upton reveals that monthly production of Raspberry Pi has recently increased from 400,000 to 600,000, 800,000, and 1 million and that this level can be “sustained until the remaining customer backlog is eliminated and we return to a state of adequate supply.

There are some early signs that supply is returning to normal, at least for some models of Raspberry Pi. UK-based Raspberry Pi distributor Pimoroni announced today that it has lifted purchase restrictions on the 2GB and 4GB Raspberry Pi 4, as well as the Raspberry Pi Zero W (excluding the recently launched Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W).

Even if inventory returns to normal, consumers will still have to deal with the fallout from supply shortages; the 2GB Raspberry Pi 4’s previous “temporary” price increase still hasn’t been restored to its original price, and Upton’s past statements have implied that the company has delayed development of the Raspberry Pi 5 in order to allow inventory of existing models to return to normal (the Raspberry Pi 4 was introduced more than four years ago). (the Raspberry Pi 4 was launched more than four years ago).

While waiting for Raspberry Pi supplies to return to normal, enthusiasts have turned to a variety of other hardware to perform some of the lightweight tasks that the Raspberry Pi excels at, but some of the alternative devices don’t apply to hardware and software projects that were designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi.

Raspberry Pi supply since 2021 continued to be short, third-party prices rose, so many users turned to other competitors’ products. At a recent Raspberry Pi community event, Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton acknowledged this and said that “the supply of Raspberry Pi is currently being upgraded.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation

Eben Upton said, “The Raspberry Pi team is now increasing the production and sales of Raspberry Pi, and expects to sell 800,000 units in June and 1 million units in July.” He also said, “It’s been a painful two years since we experienced the Raspberry Pi supply shortage in 2021, but we are confident that the shortage is behind us.”

▲ Image source Raspberry Pi Foundation

Raspberry Pi sold only 600,000 units in May 2023; and in the first quarter of 2023, the Raspberry Pi also sold only 800,000 units, which became the lowest quarter of Raspberry Pi sales since 2015. According to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, “This is due to the lack of follow-up sales caused by the previous Raspberry Pi promotion during the Christmas holidays in 2022”.

Eben Upton commented that “2023 will be our strongest year ever for Raspberry Pi and corresponding module sales, thanks to the raw material stock provided by our partner Sony, and the rebound in market demand after a slow first quarter”.

The Raspberry Pi is a miniature single-board computer developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in the UK to promote basic computer science education in schools with low-cost hardware and free software. Each generation of the Raspberry Pi series of computers uses Broadcom’s ARM architecture processor, and today’s models (Raspberry Pi 4B) have between 2GB and 8GB of memory, use a TF card as system storage media (the initial generation used an SD card), are equipped with a USB interface and HDMI video output (with support for sound output), have built-in Ethernet/WLAN/Bluetooth connectivity (depending on the model), and have a built-in Ethernet/WLAN/Bluetooth connection. (depending on the model), and multiple operating systems are available.

According to Tom’s Hardware, Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton revealed that they have produced 10 million RP2040 chips since 2021 and expect to open more Raspberry Pi stores in the future.

He said that Raspberry Pi 2021 purchased 500 wafers. he said should be 12-inch wafers) capacity, each wafer can produce 21,000 to 22,000 RP2040 chips (size of about 2mm2), a total number of more than 10 million.

According to the report, a wafer can produce about 2,000 30mm2 bare chips, and like Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and Raspberry Pi, 4 in 45mm2 chips (respectively BCM2710 and BCM2711) can only make 1400.

During the show, he talked about possible overseas expansion when asked about the Raspberry Pi store. According to Upton, India has a large Raspberry Pi community and it could be a viable location for a future store. If the next Raspberry Pi store is located in India, it would mean that it would be the first Raspberry Pi store not located in the UK.

Publicly available information indicates that the current Raspberry Pi store is located on the first floor of the Grand Arcade shopping center in downtown Cambridge, which opens in February 2019 and offers accessories for the Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi, and more. Of course, the Raspberry Pi Store is more than just a sales store, there are often events, parties, and even developer conferences there.
