Samsung Electronics recently joined hands with Qualcomm to successfully test the implementation of 1024 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) on frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) spectrum basebands. , which can increase downlink speed by more than 20%.

Quadrature Amplitude Keying is a method of combining two amplitude modulated signals (2ASK and 2PSK) into one channel, thereby doubling the effective bandwidth for more efficient transmission of data or information.

The communications industry currently uses 256 QAM, but Samsung and Qualcomm Technologies implemented the latest 1024 QAM in compliance with the 3GPP Release 17 specifications.

This enhanced QAM technology helps operators maximize the utilization of spectrum resources, allowing mobile users to seamlessly enjoy various mobile services such as live video streaming and online multiplayer gaming.

The test was conducted at Samsung’s R&D labs in South Korea and utilized Samsung’s 5G vRAN software and radios (supporting the 2.1 GHz (FDD) and 3.5 GHz (TDD) frequency bands respectively), as well as Qualcomm Technologies’ latest Snapdragon X75 5G baseband-RF System test terminal.

This is an important milestone as it is the first time in the industry that 1024 QAM has been achieved in the FDD band. By using 20 MHz bandwidth, transmission speeds of 485 Mbps are achieved, achieving speeds close to the theoretical gain. This downlink speed is more than 20% higher than the upper limit of the speed currently achievable with 256 QAM.

According to the naming rules, these three processors will belong to the Snapdragon 4/6/7 series respectively. The development code name of SM4635 is “pitti”, while the development code names of SM6650 and SM7635 are both “volcano”.

Source Roland Quandt said in early February that SM4635 is the Snapdragon 4 Gen 3. At that time, he said that the project codenamed Kalpeni was testing a storage configuration of 6GB LPDDR4X memory + 256GB UFS 3.1 flash memory.

For reference, the model names of the previous two generations of 4 Series products, Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 2, were SM4375 and SM4450 respectively.

In terms of slightly higher-grade products codenamed “volcano”, Qualcomm is expected to repeat the strategy on Snapdragon 6 Gen1 (SM6450) and 7s Gen2 (SM7435), launching SM6650 and SM7635 as two products with similar specifications.

The previous Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and 7s Gen 2 also shared the development codename “parrot”.

Android Headlines predicts that the SM7635 chip performance will not be as good as the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 but will still be significantly improved to enhance Qualcomm’s competitiveness in the mid-range SoC field. Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro is expected to be equipped with this processor.

According to the latest news from @Tech_Reve, AMD, Samsung, and Qualcomm will cooperate to develop FSR game super-resolution technology to compete with NVIDIA DLSS, and are expected to equip Galaxy mobile phones with FSR technology and ray tracing. .

Currently, AMD is partnering with Samsung on its Exynos flagship chip, equipped with an RDNA architecture GPU. @Tech_Reve also previously stated that Samsung is developing its own GPU, which is more like a modified version of AMD GPU.

It is learned that Samsung and AMD reached a cooperation in mobile GPU in 2021. Exynos 2200 became the brand’s first SoC chip equipped with AMD RDNA architecture GPU, inheriting the hardware that was previously only available on PCs, laptops and game consoles. Advanced graphics features like accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS). However, in actual applications, the performance of this SoC chip did not meet expectations.

Qualcomm also launched Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) technology in April this year, which is a new feature that can improve the picture quality and frame rate of Android mobile games, while also extending the battery life of mobile phones. .

Qualcomm released its fourth fiscal quarter and full-year performance report as of September 24, 2023. The financial report shows that revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023 was US$8.67 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 24%; net profit was US$1.489 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 48%. Full-year revenue for fiscal year 2023 was US$35.820 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 19%; net profit was US$7.232 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 44%. Qualcomm expects revenue to reach $9.1 billion-9.9 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2024.

It is noted that despite a sharp year-on-year decline, Qualcomm’s fourth-quarter sales and earnings exceeded expectations, and Qualcomm’s stock price rose more than 3% in after-hours trading.

Qualcomm’s fortunes are closely tied to the smartphone industry, which has been in the doldrums for nearly two years.

Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala said in a conference call with analysts: “We are seeing early signs of stabilization in global 3G, 4G, 5G mobile phone demand.” He said Qualcomm expects total shipments of mobile phone chips using its mobile phones in 2023 That will be down a “mid-to-high single-digit percentage” from last year, which is better than the company had previously expected.

Qualcomm’s mobile chip sales fell 27% year over year to $5.46 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter, beating StreetAccount’s forecast of $5.34 billion. Those sales were lumped into the QCT unit, Qualcomm’s largest unit that sells processors, where sales fell 26% year over year to $7.37 billion.

The company’s automotive business was a bright spot for the QCT unit, growing 15% year over year on sales of $535 million, beating Wall Street expectations. It’s still a small business, but it will continue to grow as Qualcomm convinces more automakers and parts makers to use its chips in vehicles.

The company’s “Internet of Things” business, which also includes the chips Meta uses for its Quest headset, fell 31% year over year to $1.38 billion in revenue. The company’s lucrative licensing business, QTL, reported sales of $1.26 billion, down 12% year over year and in line with StreetAccount forecasts.

Qualcomm said earlier this year it would continue to supply 5G modems for Apple phones until 2026. Analysts had previously expected Apple to use a different modem this year.
