Qualcomm confirms PCs with Snapdragon X Elite processors can come with discrete GPUs

Qualcomm released the Snapdragon X Elite PC platform at this week’s Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii. Qualcomm said that the performance and power consumption of this new chip surpassed its competitors. Even the integrated GPU seems to outperform competitors’ current solutions.

It is noticed that during the Q&A session, Qualcomm confirmed that any manufacturer can use a discrete GPU with Snapdragon X Elite, and Qualcomm will not prevent OEM manufacturers from using independent GPUs.

The question was answered during a Q&A session by Kedar Kondap, senior vice president of Qualcomm’s computing division, and Nitin Kumar, senior director of product management, who made it clear that OEMs will not be prevented from pairing the Snapdragon X Elite with a discrete GPU. So Qualcomm leaves that choice up to the manufacturers, even as the company emphasizes that the Adreno GPU integrated into this chip is very powerful. However, they mentioned that the first batch of products will use integrated GPUs.

Snapdragon X Elite uses self-developed Oryon CPU, using 4nm process, with 12 large cores, main frequency is 3.8GHz, and supports dual-core turbo frequency to 4.3GHz.

In terms of performance, Oryon CPU’s single-core performance exceeds that of Apple’s M2 Max, while power consumption is 30% lower when reaching M2 Max’s peak performance. Compared with i9-13980HX, the single-core performance of Oryon CPU is also leading, and the energy consumption to reach the peak performance of i9-13980HX is reduced by 70%.

In terms of multi-core performance, the Oryon CPU is twice as powerful as the i7-1360P, consuming 68% less energy when reaching its peak performance. Compared with i7-13800H, performance is improved by 60% and energy consumption is reduced by 65%. Performance is also improved by 50% compared to the M2.

In terms of GPU, Adreno GPU is used, which improves performance by 2 times and reduces power consumption by 74% compared with i7-13800H. Compared with Ryzen9-7940HS, GPU performance is improved by 80% and power consumption is reduced by 80%.

In terms of AI, Snapdragon Snapdragon X Elite supports generative AI models running more than 13 billion parameters on the device side.

Snapdragon Improve the experience of using PC products.

PCs powered by Snapdragon X Elite are expected to be available in mid-2024.
