Samsung, LG, Qualcomm to join forces in XR market, collaborate on next-gen chip-based devices

According to Korean media etnews reported today, Samsung and LG have been confirmed to be developing XR devices based on Qualcomm chips. Hugo Swart, vice president of Qualcomm Technologies and general manager of the XR division, said at a recent event in Maui, USA, “We cannot disclose details about cooperation at the moment, but we are indeed cooperating with Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.”

Si Hongguo said that LG has expertise in many fields, and Samsung has made a lot of progress since announcing its cooperation with Qualcomm and Google.

Note: Samsung, Qualcomm and Google announced the formation of the XR Alliance in February this year. LG President Cho Ju-wan (transliteration) also talked about XR at the medium- and long-term business strategy press conference held in July this year, saying, At the time, we were in contact with several companies and studying the possibility of commercialization.

Samsung and LG did not specify when they would launch the products, with reports suggesting it could be as early as the first half of next year. At the same time, Si Hongguo said that he currently plans to launch the next-generation XR chip in the first quarter of next year, which will be more advanced than the second-generation chip (XR2) used in the Meta Quest headset. It is expected to have better graphics processing capabilities, video perspective capabilities and AI performance. Will be better than second generation chips.

Samsung and LG are expected to make XR terminals based on third-generation chips to take on products like Meta’s Quest and Apple’s Vision Pro. Additionally, LG said it is currently developing smart glasses.

Si Hongguo is optimistic about the prospects of XR equipment: “We believe that 2024 will be the peak year for growth of VR and AR equipment, and the next 2-5 years will be a period of continued growth.”
