The US Supreme Court on Monday again refused to hear Apple’s request to cancel three Qualcomm smartphone patents, according to Reuters.

The US Supreme Court has reserved the lower court’s ruling against Apple after it similarly rejected Apple’s appeal in June of a ruling challenging two other Qualcomm patent-related cases.

Qualcomm sued Apple in San Diego federal court, arguing that its iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch infringed its mobile technology patents. The case is part of a wider global dispute between the two tech giants.

Apple is challenging the validity of the patents at issue in the case before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the US Patent and Trademark Office. The two companies have largely stopped fighting in 2019 and have signed a multi-billion dollar agreement for Apple to continue using Qualcomm baseband chips in its iPhones. The agreement includes Apple’s licensing of thousands of Qualcomm patents but allows the Patent Board’s proceedings to continue.

The Board upheld these Qualcomm patents in 2020, and Apple then appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on the grounds that Qualcomm could use it again after the license expired (as early as 2025), and the Federal Circuit dismissed the case for lack of standing, finding that the risk of Apple being sued again was speculative.

Qualcomm again argued that Apple had not shown a concrete injury to justify the appeal, as it had in the “substantially the same” case dismissed by the High Court.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 1 processors launched https://www.techgoing.com/qualcomm-snapdragon-6-gen-1-and-4-gen-1-processors-launched/ Wed, 07 Sep 2022 12:12:54 +0000 https://www.techgoing.com/?p=23879 Qualcomm Snapdragon welcomes two new processors into their mid-rangee budget product line-up, the 6 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 1 chips.

Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 1 processors are the latest entries in the chipmaker’s product line. These processors will power budget Android devices which will launch in the coming months. The fact that these chips will power budget devices doesn’t make them any less capable to handle processing activities.

Unlike the 8+ Gen 1 and 7 Gen 1, Qualcomm Snapdragon did not share the details of these processors. But, the available promotion images for these chips tell a bit about their capabilities. The manufacturer also promises that the 6 Gen 1 and 4 Gen 1 processors will both feature upgrades in performance as against the current processors that the company has to offer in the budget performance range.

Both processors are 5G enabled, but the 6 gen 1 makes use of the 4nm fabrication processor, whereas the 4 Gen 1 is a 6nm chip. The 6 Gen 1 processor aims to turn heads as it offers support for 200MP shots, so we might start seeing some mid-range budget devices with a large sensor. As for the 4 Gen 1 processor, it offers support for a maximum of 108MP on its main camera sensor.

The more powerful 6 Gen 1 processor leans more towards the gaming community as it brings some Qualcomm core gaming features to bear. Some of the core gaming features are a 35% improvement to the Adreno GPU, a 40% improvement in Kryo CPU, and so much more. But the 4 Gen 1 processor only offers support for 120Hz, Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, and variable shading rates.

Some devices that will make use of these processors are already in the pipeline. One such device is the iQOO Z6 Lite which is to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 SoC and will launch in a few weeks. Other devices will follow through after the coming iQOO launch.

It’s been a busy day for Qualcomm, first, it unveiled its latest generation line of wearable device chipsets consisting of the Snapdragon W5 and W5+ SoCs a few hours ago. Now, the company has also revealed the date of its next Snapdragon Summit. This annual event is always held in Hawaii, and this year will be the same.

Snapdragon Summit is usually held in December, but in 2022, it will be a three-day event scheduled for November 15-17.

Here is the official Snapdragon Summit invitation from Qualcomm.

At Snapdragon Summit, we will see the debut of the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Of course, more chips could be announced at the same time as that.

While Qualcomm didn’t specifically mention why it moved the Snapdragon Summit 2022 to November, it may have something to do with the Chinese smartphone market, which typically sees a big spike in phone sales during the Chinese New Year. As a result, many Chinese companies are hoping to launch their new top-of-the-line devices before the Chinese New Year – and an early announcement of the chips powering them could help shorten lead times.

Lenovo ThinkPad X13s

The Snapdragon powered Lenovo ThinkPad has a Geekbench single-core score of 1110 and a multicore score of 5736. Aside from the Qualcomm processor, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s has a couple of features that make it worth the consideration.

This machine is a fanless device that has 32GB worth of memory to perform more tasks.
