Qualcomm launched two new processors, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 for flagship devices and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 for midrange devices.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor line just got two new entries into its family. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and 7 Gen 1 are the new 5G processors from Qualcomm. A lot has been said regarding these two processors, leaked information has shown a few of their specifications. We have as well got a picture of the devices that launch using these processors.

Up until their launch today, all specifications have been mare rumours. Qualcomm has now given details about the two new processors. The first processor on the list is an addition to the 8 Gen family, while the second is a new and freshly made processor, the 7 Gen 1. In future, more processors will join the Qualcomm family, but for now, let’s take a look at its specifications along with devices that’ll make use of either processor. 

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 specifications

Previous leaks made use of the name 8 Gen 1+ which turns out to be wrong, the actual name is 8+ Gen 1. This new processor comes with beefy specifications and improvements to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It promises to bring better gaming, audio, AI, and imagery abilities to a device that’d use it. Here is a list of its specifications:

  • Processing Units: Qualcomm Adreno GPU and a 64-bit Qualcomm Kryo CPU with a clock speed of up to 3.2 GHz.
  • Modem cellular connectivity: 8-carrier mmWave X65 5G Modem-RF System with support for global 5G SIMs.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity: Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 with a top speed of 3.2Gbps and Bluetooth 5.3.
  • Camera and video abilities: The 8+ Gen 1 chip will use a Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor and support up to 200MP on a single camera. This processor can capture 8K videos at 30fps and 4K videos at 120fps. 

Other additional features include NFC supportQualcomm quick charge 5 technology, and LPDDR5 fast storage. This processor uses a TSMC 4nm fabrication process.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 specifications

This is a new entry from Qualcomm, the 7 Gen 1 will usher in a line of new mobile processors. The 7 Gen 1 is the successor to the Snapdragon 778G+ 5G processor. Here are its specifications and features:

  • Processing Units: A 64-bit Qualcomm Kryo CPU with a clock speed of 2.4GHz and a Qualcomm Adreno GPU.
  • Modem cellular connectivity: 4-carrier mmWave X62 5G Modem-RF System which supports a global 5G connection. This supports a peak download speed of 4.4Gpbs.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity: Qualcomm FastConnect 6900, Wi-Fi 6E with a peak connection speed of 3.6Gbps. The mobile processor will also use Bluetooth 5.3.
  • Camera and video abilities: The 7 Gen 1 will use the Spectra image signal processor, and support a 200MP camera at its peak. Videoing with a device using this processor will get you 4K resolution at most.

Devices using this processor and an FHD+ screen will be able to refresh at 144Hz. Those devices to launch with a QHD+ screen and the 7 Gen 1 will refresh at 60Hz. Some top security features are present on this processor as well. This new Qualcomm processor comes with support for LPDDR5 fast storage. Just like the 8+ Gen 1 the first ever 7 Gen processor is also a 4nm chip.

We have long been in the know of which smartphones will use the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Also, we have seen leaks that point to certain coming devices that’ll use the 7 Gen 1 processor as well. Since these processors are now both official, we can expect these smartphones to start trooping into the smartphone market. Here is a list of devices that’ll use the 8+ Gen 1 processor, in no particular order:

  • Motorola Frontier (Edge 30 Ultra).
  • ASUS ROG Phone 6.
  • OSOM Privacy.
  • Xiaomi 12 Ultra and 12S series. 
  • Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4.

A lot of other manufacturers will as well use the 8+ Gen 1 processor, but the device above might be the first to launch. While the manufacturers set to launch a device that’ll use the 7 Gen 1 processor are:

  • Honor 70 series.
  • OPPO Reno 8 Pro.

Most of the devices to launch using either processor will be available in the third quarter of the year. So we should be expecting to see these processors in real action anytime soon.
