According to the official Microsoft 365 roadmap, Microsoft plans to introduce Microsoft 365 Copilot assistant to OneNote in November this year, the AI assistant can help users generate lists, draft plans, rewrite notes and so on.

Microsoft has been promoting the integration of Copilot with Office productivity suite apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the past six months, and announced in July that it plans to charge each user $30 per month ( currently about $219) for Copilot when it launches in November.

OneNote application after the integration of Copilot, users can launch Copilot on the right side of the application.

According to Microsoft, the AI assistant will be able to summarize pages, annotate sections, or create summaries based on user text, as well as create to-do lists, schedule events and meetings based on notes, or act as a chatbot to respond to user queries.

Microsoft recently released a notice announcing that it will start in November 2023, stopping the translation function in OneNote for Windows 10 application.

Users can continue to use the OneNote for Windows 10 app after November, but an error message will pop up when trying to access the translation function.

While the OneNote for Windows 10 app will still work, Microsoft has an alternative solution for those who rely on the translation feature: visit the Microsoft Store and download the OneNote app.

In addition to using the translation function, you need to purchase a subscription to Microsoft 365 Family, Personal, Business Standard, Business Premium, Apps for Business or Apps for Enterprise.

Office Home & Student and Microsoft 365 Business Basic subscriptions do not support the OneNote app.

OneNote for Windows 10 app, also known as OneNote Universal App, was initially built as a Win10 Universal Apps app and was originally planned to replace the traditional OneNote client, but was gradually abandoned by Microsoft due to the many challenges it faced in the process of advancing in the enterprise environment.

Along with Microsoft’s gradual abandonment of the UWP program, the x86 client for OneNote has regained prominence. As of today, OneNote for Windows 10 has been officially retired and only the old version is available in the Store.

Microsoft recently announced that it has raised the security level of OneNote to block 120 file types such as .bat, as well as office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Microsoft OneNote previously opened file types such as .bat with a warning dialogue box informing users that opening the attachment could damage their data. However, users still had the option to open embedded files that were marked as dangerous.

With the introduction of security improvements, users will no longer have the option to open files with dangerous extensions. Microsoft will pop up one, informing users that “Your administrator has prevented you from opening this file type in OneNote.”

Microsoft said the change will begin rolling out in Current Channel (preview) version 2304 of OneNote for Microsoft 365 on Windows devices between late April 2023 and late May 2023.

This improvement is also available in the Current Channel for Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016 retail versions, although it is not available in volume-licensed versions such as Office Standard 2019 or Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021.

The OneNote application for Windows now allows switching between vertical and horizontal layouts for tabs according to the user’s usage needs.

Microsoft announced the opening of this feature in December last year, and it has previously implemented this feature on the web, macOS, and iPad. Microsoft’s Vishnu Nath announced today that OneNote for Windows is also getting the ability to switch between vertical and horizontal tabs.

Mike Tholfsen, Chief Group Product Manager for Microsoft Education, previously wrote in a blog post as follows:

"We’ve heard from many educators and students that OneNote on Windows (Desktop) would introduce vertical tabs, making it look like OneNote for Windows 10.

Feedback from educators is a priority, so we're excited to announce that OneNote on Windows will introduce vertical tabs in early 2023, allowing users to manage notes, chapters, and pages."

Microsoft updated OneNote for Windows last week, and after a successful launch, the software giant has started offering another noteworthy feature – Pen Focused View, in which Microsoft says users can create with the stylus without distraction.

This feature is an enhancement to the OneNote full-screen page where you will see only the tools you need to take notes and outline ideas, including the custom pen option. You can show or hide the Pen toolbar in Pen Focused View from the top right corner.

This distraction-free note-taking in OneNote will not be limited to Surface PCs; it will also work on other Windows PCs with or without touch support, but it’s even better if you have a Surface stylus.

OneNote will automatically switch to Pen Focused View when your Surface stylus is not docked, and you can disable it by navigating to File > Options > Advanced and clearing the Switch to focused ink writing when pen is not docked checkbox.

There is a known issue though, Pen Focused View may not work properly when you are using a Surface stylus in Select mode.
