Foreign media CNBC reported today that according to a recently disclosed testimony record of John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of AI strategy and a former Google executive, Apple considered acquiring Microsoft’s subsidiary in 2018. Bing search engine, or a joint venture with Microsoft and a “billion-dollar” investment.

The testimony is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing antitrust case against Google. John Giannandrea revealed that at the time, Apple was considering using results provided by Bing to return answers to some Siri queries instead of Google, and to provide support for other iPhone or Mac features. Of course, the deal was not completed in the end, and John also said, “I believe Cook has told Microsoft that the deal will not proceed.”

John Giannandrea also revealed the content of an internal speech by Adrian Perica, Apple’s head of business development, in which he proposed four options for Apple and Microsoft to contact each other:

 “Organically Grow” Siri

Collaborating to build a technology called Knowledge Graph

 Co-owned Bing Search

 Acquiring Bing Search

According to previous estimates by the US investment bank Bernstein, Google pays Apple up to US$19 billion per year to become the default search engine for Apple devices.

It was previously reported that Bloomberg revealed in late September that Microsoft had considered selling its Bing search engine to Apple in 2020.

If the acquisition happens, Bing will replace Google as the default search engine on Apple devices. Microsoft executives met with Apple services chief Eddy Cue to discuss a potential deal, but the talks were exploratory and no progress was made, the report said. Because Apple didn’t move forward with the deal, the company made money from Google and was concerned that Bing wouldn’t be able to compete with Google on “quality and capabilities.”

Microsoft Bing’s CEO Mikhail Parakhin tweeted that Bing Chat (Bing Chat) performance is better than simply GPT-4, but this requires a higher cost.

Replying to a user who thought Bing Chat was better than OpenAI’s GPT-4, Palahin said, “Based on our measurements, it does perform better.” It’s worth noting that Bing Chat is based on GPT-4 provided by OpenAI, but Parahin says that Bing uses retrieval-augmented inference.

The user wanted to know if Bing Chat offers an API to the public, to which Palahin said, “Yes, we have such a service, but it’s very expensive because its requires multiple model calls and search calls, so it’s only used by a few companies so far.”

Bing Chat uses the GPT-4 model developed by OpenAI, a deep learning-based natural language generation system that generates smooth and coherent text based on user input. However, GPT-4 alone does not fulfil users’ need for accurate and relevant information, so Bing Chat also incorporates retrieval-enhanced reasoning, which retrieves relevant information from the web before generating the text and incorporates it into the generation process, which improves the quality and credibility of the generated text.

However, retrieval-enhanced reasoning techniques have their drawbacks. First, it requires more computational resources and time to perform the retrieval and generation tasks, which can increase the cost and latency. Second, without proper filtering and validation mechanisms, inaccurate or irrelevant information may be introduced. Third, if there is no proper authorization and protection mechanism, some copyright or privacy issues may be violated.

Recently a number of users have reflected that the quality of Bing Chat’s answers has declined, to which Microsoft said the company is actively monitoring user feedback and plans to make changes to address these issues in the near future.

Microsoft has started rolling out Bing Chat on Google Chrome and Apple Safari browsers, and is still testing the native dark theme.

Bing AI, powered by ChatGPT-4, is one of the most advanced and consumer-friendly language models available, Microsoft said.

It has been available to Microsoft Edge users since the end of February, and Microsoft has now started rolling out Bing AI support to all browsers, including Chrome and Safari.

WindowsLatest tests found that users can already access Bing AI in Chrome with native dark mode support, its original white background switched to a black hue to match Microsoft Edge’s new dark theme.

It is worth noting that the dark mode for Bing AI and Google Chrome is not widely available, and only a few users are currently able to use it.

A Microsoft source confirmed to Windows Latest that “Bing AI will be coming to Chrome and Safari for everyone in the next few days or weeks.”

It is learned that Microsoft executives announced in June this year that Bing Chat access would be opened to non-Edge browsers such as Chrome, but there was little mention of relevant information since then.

If you have not yet qualified for the test, even if you open the Bing homepage, you will not be able to enter the new version of the Bing chat interface. It will display: “Chat mode is only available to eligible Bing users.”

In addition, there is user feedback that although the prompts can use Bing Chat in Chrome, the actual situation still does not work.

The latest version of Microsoft Edge is sending a digital footprint of users, including the URL history of websites visited, to the Bing API site, according to a number of foreign tech media outlets including OnMSFT and The Verge.

Caitlin Roulston, Microsoft’s director of public relations, said the matter is being investigated and should be resolved as soon as possible.

On browser launch, the following GET request is sent:

www.bingapis.com/api/v7/followweb
/getdomainfilter?Id=F1E45C4A7B95B48AC3F411C6214F6B861D0C276B&edgechannel=stable

Roulston says the problem is caused by a feature in the Edge browser called “Follow this creator”.

For example, when you visit the B site, the Follow this creator icon appears in the address bar

The official statement to read in part: “The purpose of this feature is to allow users to notify Bing when they visit certain pages such as YouTube, The Verge, and Reddit, etc. So far this feature is not working properly and is sending Bing the history of all sites the user has visited. This feature is not working properly at the moment and sends the history of all websites visited by the user to Bing.”

Beijing time on April 17 news, in response to the rapid development of competitors such as Microsoft’s Bing search in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), Google is working on building a new AI search engine and adding AI functions to existing products.

In March, Google employees were shocked to learn that South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung Electronics was considering replacing Google with Microsoft’s Bing as the default search engine on its devices. Bing has been an underdog in the search engine market for years. But it got a lot more interesting for industry insiders when it recently added its new ChatGPT chatbot technology.

Internal sources suggest that Google is “panicked” by Samsung’s threat to replace its search engine. The Samsung contract is expected to bring Google $3 billion (currently about 20.61 billion RMB) in annual revenue, and this revenue source is now in jeopardy. In addition, Google also signed a $20 billion (currently about 137.4 billion RMB) similar default search engine contract with Apple, which will be renewed this year.

▲ ChatGPT is a serious threat to Google

AI rivals like the new Bing are fast becoming the most serious threat to Google’s search business in 25 years. In response, Google is rapidly building a new AI-powered search engine and upgrading existing ones with AI capabilities. Google is testing new features under a program called “Magi,” which is currently being developed by more than 160 people and initially plans to release them to as many as 1 million people in the U.S., rising to 30 million by the end of the year. The new search engine will attempt to anticipate user needs, and the plan is still in its early stages, with no release schedule yet.

Google spokeswoman Lara Levin said in a statement, “Not every brainstormed idea or product idea makes it to the ground, but as we’ve said before, we’re passionate about bringing new ideas to search.” Excited about the AI capabilities and will share more details soon.”

A user, yokoffing, shared his findings in the Reddit community that activating “compact view” removes some information and visual cards. In the post, he said that the “compact view” option only appears on certain keyword results pages.

We also tried to search for the keyword “charlie puth” in the image on Bing, but the option did not appear.

One user, Juan Buis, asked Bard: “How long could Google run Bard before shutting it down?” And Bard replied, “Google has shut down Bard on March 21, 2023, less than six months after its launch.

In many users’ jokes, Google has a “shutdown department” that specializes in cutting services such as Google Reader that have low user activity and poor profitability. Netizens have even created the killedbygoogle website, dedicated to the services that Google has cut.

The report that Tom Warren, editor-in-chief of foreign technology media The Verge, asked Bing Chat again and got a reply that it will still be closed on March 21. The article also includes links to the content of Windows Central and other media outlets.

Warren says this information actually came from a user comment on Hacker News.

Google recently launched its Bard chatbot and opened it up for public testing earlier this week. Microsoft, however, released Bing Chat a few weeks ago and opened it to the public. So what does Microsoft have to say about this up-and-coming competitor?

Earlier today, Mikhail Parakhin, head of Microsoft’s advertising and web services division, tweeted a question posed by a user. The user asked him what he thought of Bard and whether he agreed with others that “it’s incredibly poor compared to Bing AI”?

Parakhin replied that in his opinion, Google Bard was “way behind” compared to Bing Chat. He added that “considering the small amount of computing resources they have” and the fact that “they are about six months behind the state of the art in terms of core machine learning algorithms,” it is “impressive” that they have been able to achieve such results. It’s “impressive” that they were able to achieve such results. We are the “little guys” and we have learned never to underestimate Google.

One advantage that Bard has over Bing Chat, is that it doesn’t appear to have a daily or per-round limit on the number of chats. Microsoft set these limits shortly after releasing Bing Chat, and currently allows up to 150 chats per day and up to 15 chats per session.

Microsoft announced yesterday that Bing Chat, based on GPT-4, now integrates the Bing Image Creator feature. The feature is based on DALL-E, another deep learning model from OpenAI, and can automatically generate images based on text content entered by users.

In a tweet, user Shane Parr said that the Bing Image Creator feature is very restrictive and cannot create images about “Bing” keywords.

Mikhail Parakhin, Microsoft’s head of advertising and web services, admitted that “the content warning settings are too harsh and block a lot of keywords excessively”.

Parakhin’s follow-up tweet as follows: “Friends, Bing Image Creater is too restrictive for sensitive queries, and this is a stage in the release process that we must go through. We will continue to collect feedback from our users and gradually solve these problems. Maybe tomorrow you’ll be able to use these keywords to create images in Bing Chat”.

Microsoft Corp.’s integration of ChatGPT, a chatbot, into Bing search has driven people to the previously little-used search engine, boosting its page views and putting it in a better position to compete with market leader Google, according to analyst firm Similarweb.

Data as of March 20 of this year shows that since Microsoft launched its artificially intelligent version of Bing Search on February 7, Bing’s page views have risen 15.8 percent, while Google’s page views have fallen by nearly 1 percent.

16% increase in Bing page visits

These numbers are an early indication that Microsoft is taking the lead in the rapid race against Google for generative AI dominance, thanks to the technology behind ChatGPT, which has taken the world by storm since its launch and has been called the “iPhone moment” of AI by many experts. It also highlights a unique opportunity for Microsoft to enter the more than $120 billion search market. For decades, Google has dominated the search market with over 80% market share.

Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson & Co, said he expects Bing to capture search market share in the coming months, especially if Google continues to delay integrating generative artificial intelligence into its products. “Bing has less than one-tenth of Google’s market share, so even if it converts 1 percent or 2 percent of users, it will be a material benefit to Bing and Microsoft,” Luria said. Luria said. Although the artificial intelligence version of Bing has been available to most users around the world since February, Google did not start publicly releasing its chatbot “Bard” (Bard) until Tuesday.

Bing app downloads up 7x

Meanwhile, Bing’s global app downloads have also increased sevenfold after the integration of artificial intelligence, according to application research firm Data.ai. Google search app downloads fell 2 percent over the same period.

Still, some analysts believe Google is likely to overcome its early setbacks to maintain its leadership position. Google replaced then-leader Yahoo at the turn of the century as the dominant player in search. “Google’s ranking algorithm has a competitive advantage over its competitors’,” said Yongjei Jeong, an analyst at Mirae Asset Securities in South Korea, on how Google’s algorithm helped it beat Yahoo Search.
