According to the latest report published by market research organization CIRP, since Apple launched the iPhone 7 in 2017, the iPhone 14 series in the United States market share accounted for the highest percentage.

Apple iPhone

The CIRP report notes that the iPhone 7 series has created a wave of upgrades among Apple users in the U.S., topping out at 81 percent.

While Apple’s share of new iPhone models in a given year is typically around 70 percent, the iPhone 14 series has hit a recent high of 79 percent, just two percentage points shy of the iPhone 7 series, according to June 2023 statistics.

CIRP believes that there are two main factors, combed as follows:

Users lengthen the use of iPhone time

Due to the epidemic and other comprehensive factors, Apple users usually replace their phones for more than 2 years, so consumers have more incentive to buy the latest model.

Carrier discounts:

With U.S. carriers changing installment agreements for the iPhone from 24 months to 36 months, the difference in monthly cost between the iPhone 14 and older models doesn’t seem to be that big, which may motivate consumers to buy the new device.

The market research agency PerfectRec found that the word-of-mouth of the iPhone 14 series has declined significantly based on the evaluations generated by 600,000 users of the iPhone 14 and other iPhone models.

Successive iPhone word-of-mouth satisfaction data

The report counts the iPhone models released by Apple from 2011 to 2022, and based on user reviews, counts the proportion of five-star praise.

The basic iPhone model was the best seller, and word-of-mouth satisfaction rose from 65% to 80% (iPhone 13) during this period, while the iPhone 14 model dropped 8 percentage points, giving five-star praise to 72%.

The only other drop over the past 12 years was from the iPhone 4 to 5, a 4 percent drop.

In the user’s evaluation of the iPhone 14 Pro model, 76% of people gave five-star praise, but compared with the iPhone 13 Pro (84%), it dropped by 8 percentage points.

Apple has introduced a car accident detection function in the iPhone 14 / Pro series mobile phones, which is designed to automatically contact emergency services when a collision is detected.

Car crash detection is available on Apple iPhone 14/Pro series models and the latest Apple Watch. Using sensors like accelerometers and gyroscopes, the feature can detect serious crashes and automatically call emergency services if the user doesn’t respond to the alert within 20 seconds.

This function can indeed save lives in emergency situations, but there have been many complaints that it can also be triggered accidentally during skiing, rides, and other non-emergency activities.

Apple has refined collision detection in the last few iOS 16 updates to reduce false positives. In the recently updated car accident detection support document, Apple also changed its advice to users when making an accidental call, instead of hanging up the phone, but explaining to emergency responders that no help is needed.

Apple also removed content from the support document that advised users to cancel calls during the 20-second timer — “If you do not need to contact emergency services, tap Cancel and confirm that you do not need emergency services.”

In other words, Apple hopes that users who make emergency calls by mistake will get through the phone and tell them that they don’t need help, instead of hanging up by themselves.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in his latest tweet that Apple will launch at least one new color for the iPhone 14 in the near future.

Gurman’s tweet is as follows: “One year after the green iPhone 13 was launched, the iPhone 14 desperately needs a new color.”

Apple usually launches a new color scheme for the iPhone model at the spring conference. Summary of the new colors added by Apple in previous spring events are as follows:

In March 2017, Apple added (PRODUCT) RED special editions to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

In April 2018, Apple added (PRODUCT) RED special editions to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

In April 2021, Apple added purple to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini.

In March 2022, Apple added green to the iPhone 13 and Pale Green to the iPhone 13 Pro.

Foreign technology media MacRumors learned from multiple sources that Apple plans to invite reporters to participate in the new product launch tomorrow (March 8), and may launch a new iPhone.

Earlier reports said that Apple will launch yellow for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models.

Leaker Majin Bu claims that Apple plans to offer leather cases in two more colors for the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max as part of its upcoming spring collection. New color options include Deep Violet and Golden Brown.

Some of Apple’s IC and component suppliers said some orders for the iPhone 14 series were delayed until the first quarter of 2023, according to industry sources, Digitimes reported. 2022 saw a high level of uncertainty in the smartphone market, with many Android handset makers, including Samsung Electronics, Xiaomi and Oppo, failing to meet annual sales targets. Only sales and component input for Apple’s iPhone 14 series remained stable, the sources said.

An IC distributor in Taiwan, China, which represents Apple’s radio frequency (RF) communication chips, said demand for the iPhone 14 series in 2022 is down slightly compared to demand in 2021. Nonetheless, order visibility and pull-in is significantly better compared to Android.
Sources pointed out that China Taiwan is an important part of Apple’s supply chain, with TSMC and Foxconn both having a strong presence. China-Taiwan peripheral IC, key component, optical component and passive component suppliers, as well as OSAT vendors also play an important role.

The sources said that Chinese Taiwanese manufacturers, which account for a relatively high proportion of iOS orders, are expected to maintain relatively stable operations in 2022.

However, the sources pointed out that most Taiwanese companies have invested heavily in both iOS and Android systems. Therefore, it will be difficult for iOS devices to fully compensate for the weakness of Android performance.

IC dealers pointed out that when the U.S. sanctioned Huawei, China’s domestic high-end cell phone market share was not taken away by OPPO, Vivo and Samsung. Instead, it actually stimulated the iPhone’s market share growth.

Industry insiders estimate that Apple will be one of the first companies to adopt TSMC’s advanced process. However, they are still unsure when the market will recover. The outlook for the Android market remains bearish until at least the third quarter of 2023.

IC resellers say Apple expects incoming shipments to remain stable in 2023, with the next-generation iPhone launching in September as scheduled. However, sources say Apple may delay or cancel its fourth-generation cheap model, the iPhone SE, until 2024.

What is certain is that Apple will tightly control costs and squeeze supply chain margins in 2023, the sources said. This is the result of increasing costs for advanced semiconductor processes, the ongoing upgrade of iPhone camera modules, the need to bring USB-C to the iPhone and considerations for the relocation of Apple’s production base.

Apple officially supports iPhone battery service, which can replace iPhone batteries for users for a service fee. Apple’s warranty does not provide coverage for battery loss caused by normal use. If a user has an AppleCare+ service plan and the product’s battery storage is less than 80 percent of its initial capacity, the user’s iPhone is eligible for free battery replacement.

According to Apple’s official support statement, as of the end of February 2023, the fees for out-of-warranty battery services will be charged at current prices. Starting March 1, 2023, the out-of-warranty battery service fee for all iPhone models prior to iPhone 14 will increase by RMB 169.

The additional battery service fee for the iPhone 14 series is RMB 748, the additional battery service fee for the iPhone 13 series is RMB 519, and the additional battery service fee for the iPhone 12 series is RMB 519. After March 1, 2023, the battery service fee for these models will rise to 688 RMB.

Users can see what they might be charged through the Get an Estimate tool. If service is obtained from an Apple Store, Apple will charge the service fee shown in the tool. Other service providers set their own fees, so ask them for an estimate.

The price of paid repairs may vary depending on the user’s decision to dispose of the old part. Apple will inspect the product upon receipt and confirm the service charge. If a user’s iPhone has any damage that prevents a battery replacement, such as a cracked screen, the problem needs to be addressed before the battery can be replaced. In some cases, repair charges may be incurred.

According to Taiwan’s “Economic Daily News” reported that the global inflationary pressure, rumors that Apple also can not bear, intends to cut the iPhone supply chain prices to protect profits, lock the higher unit price of the lens first “open”, the first half of next year iPhone 14 series part of the lens cut price range of up to 20%, the market is concerned about the lens suppliers such as Dali light, Yu crystal light and Sunyu operations fear pressure.

Dalit and Yu Jingguang responded yesterday that they would not comment on the order dynamics of a single customer. However, the chairman of the board of directors of Dali Light, Mr. Lin Enping, said frankly in the October meeting that “price cutting has always been very aggressive, and the price pressure is always on.”

Market analysts say that in previous years, after the new iPhone was launched, Apple would bargain with component suppliers quarter by quarter to reduce costs.

A report released yesterday by research firm TrendForce pointed out that due to the adjustment of the mainland’s epidemic prevention policy and the proximity of the Lunar New Year, the mainland’s supply chain was short of labor in mid-December and the trend is expanding. Apple is facing a shortage of labor in the assembly industry chain, as well as global economic headwinds impacting sales performance, and estimated that iPhone shipment will drop to 47 million units in the first quarter of next year, down 22 percent annually.

TrendForce has lowered Apple’s iPhone 14 series shipments to 78.1 million units in 2022, according to a report released today.

TrendForce said Foxconn has been the exclusive assembler of the Pro series for years, but Apple had originally intended to find other manufacturers to join the production and assembly ranks based on risk management, and to try it out on the iPhone 14 Pro series.

The report points out that Foxconn’s crop rate has been affected by the epidemic, which has made Lixson Precision one of the iPhone 15 Pro Max assembly supply chains, and its iPhone foundry is still located in China, while the Vietnam plant is mainly around Apple, and there is no iPhone production line planned yet.

In terms of overseas production, the report says that in addition to the existing Indian production capacity doubling next year, the Vietnam plant is also scheduled to join production starting in mid-2023. The proportion of Apple’s manufacturing in India and Vietnam is expected to climb to 30-35% of total production capacity in the next few years.

TrendForce estimates that Apple’s iPhone shipments will drop to 47 million units in the first quarter of 2023, a 22 percent decline compared to the same period last year.
