Market research organization CIRP recently released a report that the appeal of Apple iPhones to Android users in the US market has begun to decline. After experiencing a peak of 15% in 2022, it will begin to decline in 2023.

So among the 13% of users who switched from Android, which iPhone model do they most like to switch to? The answer is iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

According to the latest US new iPhone purchase data released by CIRP, the most popular model is iPhone 14/Plus, with 26% of Android users choosing iPhone 14/Plus during 2023. The screenshots is as follows:

Following closely behind is the iPhone 14 Pro/Max, accounting for 25% of users who converted from Android. This shows that users who have switched from the Android camp have little interest in buying Apple’s latest and greatest products.

What’s more interesting is that when it comes to choosing entry-level iPhone models, the proportion of Android users who will buy iPhone SE or iPhone 12 in 2023 is 10% and 8%, which is 2 times that of native iPhone users.

According to the screen supply chain consulting company DSCC announced the latest screen panel shipments selling price, Apple iPhone 14 Plus sales than the iPhone 13 mini better.

Comparing iPhone panel shipments from June 2022 to April 2023 (with estimates for March-April this year), the report shows that shipments of the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus are 59 percent higher than shipments of the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini.

The iPhone 14 Plus is the least popular model in Apple’s iPhone 14 lineup, but panel shipment data suggests that the iPhone 14 Plus is better than the iPhone 13 mini.

Overall, the iPhone 14 series is more popular with consumers than its predecessor, with panel shipments estimated to be up 2 percent year-over-year as of April this year. The iPhone 14 series is being driven by the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models.

The report said iPhone 14 Pro accounted for 28 percent of panel shipments; iPhone 14 Pro Max accounted for 36 percent of panel shipments; iPhone 14 accounted for 25 percent of panel shipments; iPhone 14 Plus accounted for only 11 percent.

Taiwan Economic Daily said that Apple’s foundry Pegatron has passed the audit and successfully won higher-end iPhone 14 Pro assembly orders, and even started mass shipments in January this year, and is expected to continue to receive new models. Orders for high-end models of the iPhone 15 Po series.

The current iPhone 14 Pro production line of the Pegatron Shanghai Changshuo plant has stabilized, and the production will increase month by month in February and March this year.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

In January of this year, Pegatron’s revenue was NT$124.608 billion (currently approximately RMB 28.161 billion), a month-on-month increase of 10.50% and a year-on-year increase of 1.19%, a record high for the same period of the year and better than market expectations. Pegatron pointed out that the increase in revenue in January was mainly due to the communication business.

According to the Economic Daily, the market expects that Pegatron’s revenue will rise against the trend in January this year, mainly due to the drive of the old Apple iPhone 13 and the transfer of some iPhone 14 Pro orders.

Looking forward to this year, Pegatron believes that overall operations will grow slightly, but new businesses such as automotive electronics and communication products are expected to continue to grow.

Pegatron initially received some iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus assembly orders from Apple last year and was the main foundry for the iPhone 14 Plus. However, under the influence of Apple’s high pricing, the overall sales of the iPhone 14 Plus were poor, which also dragged down the performance of the main foundry Pegatron in the fourth quarter of last year.

The industry believes that when the production capacity of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max of Hon Hai, the largest iPhone foundry, was affected, Apple considered starting a wider range of diversified production at that time, and released some high-end orders to Pegatron and Luxshare Precision. This avoids production risks, which also gives Pegatron and Luxshare Precision an opportunity. It seems that Pegatron has successfully seized this opportunity.

The iPhone 14 Plus has seen significantly lower-than-expected market demand, with Apple previously cutting back on orders for its related components. The latest news from screen supply chain consulting firm DSCC’s CEO Ross Young says that shipments of screen components for the iPhone 14 Plus have dropped to almost zero.

From the chart shared by Young that the combination of screen orders for all iPhone 14 models in November 2022 is still relatively reasonable, but in December last year and January this year iPhone 14 Plus screen orders were close to zero.

The chart shows that a small number of iPhone 14 Plus screens will ship in February, indicating that Apple will replenish iPhone 14 Plus inventory during the month. The chart also shows that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max accounted for 75 percent of shipments in December and are expected to reach 80 percent by the end of February.

Citing foreign technology media DigiTimes, Apple’s main foundry, PEGATRON, reported dismal revenue in November this year. In addition to the consumer electronics industry entering the traditional off-season, another important reason is the lack of consumer interest in the iPhone 14 Plus model, resulting in a significant drop in sales.

In this paid article, DigiTimes believes that Apple may rethink the model mix in next year’s iPhone 15 models, redistributing the performance differences between the standard and Pro models, redistributing the prices between them, and not ruling out the possibility of making major adjustments to the iPhone 15 Plus.

In the article, it is stated that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models are priced higher, but additional features such as Lingering Island make users more willing to go for them. Apple previously expected that the larger iPhone 14 Plus model would be recognized by consumers after the mini model was cut, but after weighing the price difference and performance/functionality differences between the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro, consumers are more likely to buy the latter.

The iPhone 14 Plus isn’t a bad device: the screen is great, the design is clean, the performance is solid, and that’s about it. The device’s overall sales results reflect that lull. According to Digitimes, PEGATRON, the maker of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, saw a monthly decline in revenue, with a 28.3 percent drop in November.

As Digitimes points out, the iPhone 14 Plus went on sale more than a month later than the other models. And during this delay, customers had the opportunity to learn about the iPhone 14 Pro’s unique features.

As consumers realized that the iPhone 14 Plus was not particularly attractive for the money, they abandoned it. 14 and 14 Plus seem to increasingly represent the lost generation. By 2022, they will account for just 36 percent of Apple’s smartphone sales.

In a press release issued earlier this week, Apple said that the satellite emergency help feature in iPhone 14 models will be available to more countries and regions next year. But Apple did not specify in the press release its plans for next year’s expansion.

Satellite Emergency Help went live first in the U.S. and Canada this November and requires iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 16.1 or later.

The service was made available to iPhone 14 owners in France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom earlier this week, with some local emergency service numbers requiring iOS 16.2. The service is free for two years starting when the iPhone 14 model is activated.

Apple’s official support documentation states.

"1. in the United States and Canada, call or text 911. in France, call or text 112, 15, 17, 18, 114, 119, 191, and 196. in Germany, text 112 and 110. in Ireland and the United Kingdom, call or text 999 or 112. 2.

2. When calling or texting 15, 17, 18, 114, 119, 191, and 196 in France, 110 in Germany, and 999 in Ireland, you will need iOS 16.2 to connect to emergency services via satellite. The exact availability of these additional emergency numbers may also depend on your cellular network carrier."

The feature allows iPhone 14 models to connect to Globalstar satellites, enabling users to send text messages to emergency services from outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Apple said it can take up to 15 seconds to send a text message via satellite under “ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon,” but foliage or other obstructions can cause a text message to take longer or not be sent. Apple said satellite connections may also not work in places above 62° latitude, such as Alaska and northern parts of Canada.

According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, Apple iPhone 14 Plus sales were dismal, affecting foundry PEGATRON’s November revenue down 13.9% from October and down 28.3% year-over-year.

Pegatron’s November revenue was NT$113.474 billion (about RMB 25.872 billion), down 28.3% year-over-year; consolidated revenue for the first 11 months of the year reached NT$120.5609 billion (about RMB 274.879 billion), up 8.8% year-over-year.

In terms of shipments, Pegatron shipped 600,000 notebook PCs in November, up more than 20% from the previous month; 300,000 to 350,000 desktops and motherboards were shipped, unchanged from the previous month; consumer products also entered the traditional low season.

The market expects that Pegatron’s lower revenue in November was mainly affected by the dismal sales of the iPhone 14 Plus. In addition to iPhone 14 Plus and some iPhone 14, the old iPhone 13 still contributed more to Pegatron’s revenue. However, Pegatron’s revenue is expected to be lower in December as Europe and the US enter the traditional slow season.

The production process for the Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Plus across various production plants will be cut down by up to 3 million units. People conversant with this matter say that the cut is a result of the reduction of demand and popularity of the said iPhone models. Many users from various regions have chosen to entirely skip the base models of the 14 series and stick to the Pro models thanks to the upgrades they bring.

Other users aiming to switch to the 14 base models have thought it wise not to upgrade since the 13 and 13 mini offer similar performance to the 14 and 14 Plus. After close consideration the specifications of the iPhone 14 and 13 are so similar that they can be negligible, the design of the two devices is also the same contributing to a lack of innovation in the newer device. This is making the popularity of the Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Plus dwindle across regions where the device retails.

Cutting the production of these devices will be able to save Apple some cost in terms of production, hence channelling the money to other aspects of their business. As we know, the sale of iPhones is the major source of revenue for the Silicon Valley company, as they have a strong grip on the smartphone market in certain regions. Following this closely is the sale of their MacBooks, which bring power to many professionals across various fields of work.

Despite making a profit after realizing sales for the fourth quarter of 2022 Apple needs to readjust its outlook for its coming iPhone 15 base models. Making the switch to a new processor, adopting the Dynamic island, and brushing up photography abilities will make the coming base model iPhones more appealing. Possibly, Apple might still stick with the Plus entry in the 15 series, but, the iPhone 14 Plus has grown to become the least attractive entry in the 14 series.

Apple slightly ahead of Wall Street’s expectations in the September quarter, which included the launch of the iPhone 14 / Pro series, analysts’ attention has begun to shift to the crucial holiday quarter.

Apple-iPhone-14-Plus

In a note to investors, investment bank Cowen predicted that Apple’s September quarter results would slightly beat Wall Street’s expectations but would be in line with guidance for the holiday quarter.

Cowen said Apple’s high-end iPhone was the main factor driving its revenue growth. However, demand for the iPhone 14 Plus fell short of analysts’ expectations, which was cited as a risk factor.

A report dated October 18 says Apple has cut production of the iPhone 14 Plus handset. According to DigiTimes, several supply chain manufacturers and channel vendors have confirmed that they have received notice from Apple to cut production of the iPhone 14 Plus by around 40 percent. Apple is shifting production away from the non-Pro models to produce more iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices, the latter two of which have seen a significant increase in parts shipments. total iPhone 14 Plus shipments could be revised down to around 10 million units in 2022.

Cowen forecasts that Apple will ship 51 million iPhones in the fiscal third quarter, which is in line with other industry analysts’ forecasts. Shipments in the fiscal fourth quarter are likely to be around 80 million units.

Analysts have slightly lowered their expectations for iPhone shipments in the December 2022 and March 2023 quarters to 82 million and 55 million respectively. Previous forecasts were for 83 million and 58 million.

Apple iPad and Mac sales are expected to show double-digit year-over-year growth, with increased enterprise adoption of iPad likely to help offset lower consumer demand.

Apple’s services business, which includes Apple Care, iCloud and others, is expected to grow +9 percent year-over-year in the fiscal third quarter. cowen expects improvement in the fiscal fourth quarter, forecasting +11 percent year-over-year growth, driven by increased App Store spending during the holiday season.

Cowen maintains its $200 price target on Apple stock AAPL, based on a multiple of 22x earnings for Apple’s hardware business and 39x recurring revenue for its services business. The bank estimates Apple’s natural year 2023 earnings per share at a blended 30x multiple of $6.65.

Apple AAPL stock has outperformed the Nasdaq by 12% and the S&P by 3% so far this year.

Apple is cutting production capacity for the iPhone 14 Plus just weeks after it shipped, as it reassesses demand for the device, according to two people familiar with Apple’s supply chain.

Apple has told at least one Chinese Apple maker to suspend production of iPhone 14 Plus components immediately. This comes at a time when the global smartphone market has softened, with smartphone shipments down 9 percent year-on-year in the third quarter and demand still not likely to be high for the next six to nine months.

The iPhone 14 Plus was announced on 7 September, it was cheaper than the iPhone 14 Pro and the phone went on sale on 7 October. Apple had expected demand for the new phone to be very strong, but Apple’s wishes fell through and last month Apple has abandoned its plans to increase production of the new phone.
