Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is planning to launch iPadOS 16.1 in the last week of October, provided no new software bugs or issues are found. in a tweet, Gurman says iPadOS 16.1 is scheduled for release the week of October 24, and that Apple may even launch iOS 16.1 at the same time.

Apple had previously said that iPadOS 16 would be released in October, but did not provide a specific release date. iPadOS 16 was initially expected to be released with iOS 16 in September, but Apple delayed the software update after some users criticized the new Stage Manager feature that allows multiple apps in overlapping windows.

Apple recently extended Stage Manager to older iPad Pro models with the A12X and A12Z chips released in 2018 and 2020, albeit without external display support, which limits functionality to four apps on the built-in displays of those models. Apple is also delaying external display support for iPad models with the M1 chip until later this year.

Apple will release the official version of iPadOS 16 (or iPadOS 16.1) to the public in October, but users are still facing several problems and bugs when using the new Front Desk Scheduler feature.

In the recent release of Apple’s iPadOS 16.1 Developer Preview / Public Beta 5, developer Steve Troughton-Smith and MacStories editor-in-chief Federico Viticci highlighted various UI issues they still face from time to time when using the front scheduler, including the Dock bar disappearing when the iPad is rotated, and the content not scaling properly when the window is resized. The content does not scale properly when resizing the window, keyboard input is not enabled in some apps, black borders appear around windows, and more. In addition, dragging the title bar to move the window still sends the drag event to the app itself. This also conflicts with a swipe to return. Desktop use is still problematic.

In August this year, Viticci criticized Apple for being “fundamentally misleading” about desktop scheduling. The feature has improved in the weeks since, but as seen in the latest Beta 5, there are still multiple issues with iPadOS 16 even as it approaches its release to the general public.

Apple recently extended front-of-house scheduling to older iPad Pro models 2018 (A12X) and 2020 (A12Z), despite the lack of external display support, which will limit the use of the built-in display to four apps. Apple has also delayed external display support for the M1 iPad models, which is not expected to arrive until later this year.

Front of Desk Scheduling allows users to open up to four apps in overlapping windows on the iPad display to improve the multitasking experience. Modified front-of-the-desk scheduling is also available on macOS 13 Ventura for keeping windows front and center.

Apple has said that iPadOS 16 will be released in October but has not confirmed a specific date. The software update will be marked as iPadOS 16.1 and it will likely be released alongside the official iOS 16.1 release for iPhone, as these updates share the same Build version number.

In addition to iOS 16.1 Beta 2, macOS Ventura Beta 8, tvOS 16.1 Beta 2 and watchOS 9.1 Beta 2, Apple also pushed out the iPadOS 16.1 Developer Preview Beta 3 update.

Earlier last month, a Bloomberg report revealed that Apple was considering delaying the release of iPadOS 16 until October because the company was unhappy with the experience of the front-of-the-stage scheduling feature. Now that Apple has confirmed that the release of iPadOS 16 has been delayed, developers can install the iPadOS 16.1 beta.

Of course, Apple isn’t directly saying that the release of iPadOS 16 has been delayed due to bugs or other quality issues. Instead, the company claims that this is “a big year for iPadOS” and that it will now have “its own timeline”.

Here is a statement sent by Apple to TechCrunch.

"This year is a particularly important one for iPadOS. As our own platform designed specifically for the iPad, we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on our own schedule. iPadOS will be available after iOS this autumn, in version 16.1."

The iPad iOS 16.1 beta has many of the features of iOS 16, but the most important feature is the M1 iPad Air and M1 iPad Pro exclusive front-of-stage scheduling feature, and another important feature is the ability to get external display support. There’s also the iCloud Shared Photo Library feature, which allows users to share a separate iCloud photo library with up to five people who can add, edit, favorite, caption and delete photos. In addition, users can edit, unsend and mark messages as unread. iPadOS 16.1 will also bring a new weather app, similar to the experience on macOS Ventura, with animated backgrounds, more weather details, forecasts, air quality and more.

How to upgrade iOS / iPadOS / watchOS / macOS Dev / Public Beta?

Simply download and install the [description file] to detect the development / public beta update in System Update.

Note: that there may be a slight delay in detecting the update in some locations due to server configuration caching issues on Apple’s regional nodes, usually within half an hour.

The first public release of iPadOS 16 will be iPadOS 16.1 in October. Apple is currently beta testing iOS/iPadOS 16, with the former expected to be released with iPhone 14 this September, but the latter Apple will skip iPadOS 16.0 and release it in October this year. iPadOS 16.1.

On the occasion of the iOS/iPadOS 16 Beta 7 release, foreign tech media TechCrunch mentioned that “Apple is pushing iPadOS 16.1 Beta to registered developer devices”. This report seemed pre-written at the time, as Apple’s beta documentation referred to iPadOS 16.0 beta 7 instead of 16.1.

However, AppleInsider, a foreign technology media outlet, showed on an iPad device running the developer beta: “Your iPad has been upgraded to 16.1. In a statement, Apple said, “There have been a lot of changes to iPadOS this year. Not only do we have a number of features designed exclusively for iPad, but we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on our own schedule. iPadOS will be released after iOS this fall with a free upgrade directly to 16.1.”

Apple today pushed the iOS 16 Developer Preview Beta 7 update (internal version number: 20A5356a) to iPhone users, 8 days after the last release. This time, iPadOS 16 Developer Preview Beta 7 was not released simultaneously, but directly jumped to iPadOS 16.1 Developer Preview Beta.

Apple has introduced a new lock screen design for iOS 16. Whether it’s widgets, notification designs or fonts and colors, you can personalize it with a high degree of freedom, and it will also support multiple lock screens.

The Focus mode is easier to adjust than before and you can weed out content you don’t like directly in the app. With the Messages app, you can now edit or withdraw sent content or mark messages as unread, and it also supports SharePlay, very similar to FaceTime.

The Mail app has improved search tools and also supports actions such as retractions. You can even set a reminder to check your email if you don’t receive a reply.

Apple is also working on replacing passwords with Passkeys to sign in to accounts, a more secure form of biometrics.

The iCloud Photo Library helps users easily share photos with other family members, and there’s support for real-time text/subtitle display in videos. Also, it has an interesting new feature where you can extract the subject from the background (with the help of Visual Lookup).

Elsewhere, dictation has also been improved, Maps now supports multi-stop directions, Apple offers Apple Pay Later for layaway payments, and the Family App gets a new look.

For iPadOS, Apple also added Stage Manager to bring Mac-like multitasking, though it’s limited to the M1 iPad. iPadOS version 16.1 will be released directly, Apple confirmed. iPadOS 16.1 Developer Preview Beta Released, iPadOS 16 Officially Cancelled” Apple iOS Overhaul!

The beta version of iOS 16 has added a battery percentage display to the iPhone status bar, including a new option to turn off the battery percentage in the iPhone status bar with the bangs screen in low battery mode. New sound settings have also been introduced so you can better find your Apple Watch or locate your iPhone by sound.
