It is not uncommon for server processors to support more instructions than desktop processors. But tipster @InstLatX64 discovered that Intel Arrow Lake S desktop CPUs will support more instructions than laptop CPUs.

According to the 50th Future ISA Guide document, Arrow Lake processors in the LGA1851 package will support instructions such as AVX-VNNI-INT16, SHA512, SM3, and SM4. Additionally, the CPU will support LBR event logging functionality.

None of these instructions can be carried on the mobile Arrow Lake processor. It may be because the ultra-low-power x86 core in the SoC chip does not support these instructions. Intel officials did not give a specific explanation.

Among them, AVX-VNNI-INT16 is a vector neural network instruction with a 16-bit integer data type specifically designed to accelerate convolutional neural networks (CNN) and deep learning workloads for generative AI. SHA512, SM3, and SM4 are cryptographic technologies designed to speed up proper encryption algorithms.

According to previous reports, Intel Arrow Lake-S is the next generation desktop CPU platform (15th generation Core), which will use the new LGA-1851 socket and is expected to be launched in the second half of 2024.

Intel Arrow Lake-S is expected to provide a 5% improvement in single-threaded workloads and a 15% improvement in multi-threading compared to Raptor Lake Refresh.

The next-generation desktop and mobile terminals adopt a new microarchitecture, with the performance core called Lion Cove and the efficiency core called Skymont. These new series will also use Intel 20A process nodes and adopt the Xe-LPG architecture based on Alchemist.

In September this year, the European Union fined Intel 376 million euros for a market monopoly case between 2002 and 2007, accusing it of “obstructing competitors from entering the market with naked restrictive behavior.”

Intel stated in its third quarter report that it plans to appeal the European Commission’s decision to impose an antitrust fine of 376 million euros.

It is learned that the EU antitrust agency said in 2009 that Intel tried to suppress its competitor AMD by providing rebates to computer manufacturers Dell, HP, NEC and Lenovo to encourage the above-mentioned companies to purchase chips from Intel.

In early 2022, Intel won a lawsuit against the EU antitrust regulator for a $1.2 billion fine, and the EU General Court in Luxembourg dismissed most of the regulator’s 2009 ruling.

The court said at the time that the analysis conducted by EU antitrust regulators was incomplete and failed to establish the necessary legal standards to judge the competitive impact of rebates. Notably, the court said it could not determine damages related to Intel’s conduct and therefore eliminated the portion related to fines entirely.
