The design of electric vehicles continues to evolve, but some car manufacturers have given up on the design of air intake grilles. For manufacturers that retain grilles, their closed designs often receive mixed reviews.

Hyundai Mobis is working hard to make traditional grilles work in the new energy era. To this end, the company developed an “integrated front module” that improves aerodynamics while providing a more traditional appearance.

This module draws on the concept of active grille opening and closing, and reduces wind resistance through openable components. But it does much more than that, with active air curtains, air skirts, grille flaps and hood vents at the front. These devices work together to optimize aerodynamics and exchange heat to increase battery cooling efficiency.

Thanks to this versatile design, the range of an electric vehicle can be increased by approximately 20 kilometers. Hyundai Mobis says the technology is particularly useful for models such as crossovers and SUVs, which tend to have limited aerodynamic optimization options.

In addition to active air vents, the module also has features such as automatic retraction of the charging plug and a retractable LiDAR sensor. The LiDAR sensor only extends when the vehicle is in motion and retracts into the grille when the vehicle is parked, reducing the risk of scratch damage and repair costs.

In addition to the above-mentioned advantages, this module also allows car manufacturers to adopt traditional grille designs, giving the vehicle more personality in terms of appearance.

Hyundai Mobis pointed out, “Electric vehicles usually adopt a streamlined design and reduce wind resistance by eliminating the radiator grille, which also leads to the homogeneity of the appearance of electric passenger vehicles.” They hope that this technology can not only improve aerodynamics Learning performance can also make your products unique in design.

It is unclear when mass-produced models equipped with the new front module will be launched, but Hyundai Mobis is working hard to develop overseas markets and expand order sources beyond South Korea.

They will be unveiled at the CES International Consumer Electronics Show on January 7. Hyundai Mobis is part of the Hyundai-Kia Group and is an auto parts manufacturing company.

It is reported that the Mobion concept car will be built based on Hyundai IONIQ 5. As can be seen from the brightened trailer, the Mobion concept car is equipped with a split headlight design. The light group consists of two horizontal and diagonal LED light strips, forming a sharp front face. The center of the front of the car is equipped with a light-up Mobis LOGO. In addition, from the first picture, you can also see that there are eight-shaped LED light groups on both sides of the LOGO.

Looking at the rear of the car, the car uses through-type taillights, and there are dense sets of parallel light strips below the taillights. The red Mobis LOGO is in the center, which further adds to the sci-fi feel of the rear of the car. On the lower part of the car body, you can see wheels with extremely exaggerated steering angles. It is reported that the car uses an e-Corner system. All four wheels can reach a 90-degree steering angle, or have the ability to travel laterally, further improving the flexibility when parking in small spaces. sex.

In addition, Hyundai Mobis also released a preview image of a new transparent screen. The display screen uses holographic optical display technology and is made of soft and bendable materials. Judging from the preview, the screen can simultaneously display vehicle speed, gear, navigation, audio-visual entertainment and weather information. In addition, Hyundai Mobis will also demonstrate a new integrated charging system at CES with a rated power of 22kW, which is twice the power of Hyundai’s existing charging system.

At the 2023 Media Technology Day held at the Youngnyeong R&D Center in Gyeonggi-do, Hyundai Mobis showcased its technological prowess in the infotainment display market. The company’s 34-inch rotating display and scrolling display are billed as “both world firsts,” and both can change size depending on the driving situation. For example, during driving, the screen can be transformed into a smaller navigation mode, and during autonomous driving or parking, the screen can be transformed into a larger mode again, allowing users to watch content on a large screen.

The media also revealed that Hyundai Mobis has invested more than 1 trillion won in R&D every year for the past three years. The company has developed a holographic augmented reality head-up display (AR-HED) using proprietary technology that can realize various information such as road guidance and lane changes as AR while driving.

It is noticed that the “Top 100 Global Auto Parts Industry” report released by “Automotive News” showed that South Korea’s Hyundai Mobis ranked sixth on the list, and the top five manufacturers were Germany’s Bosch, Nippon Electric’s Garment, ZF of Germany, Magna International of Canada, Ningde Times of China.

A total of 13 companies from China were included in the “Top 100 Global Auto Parts Industry”, and other countries: 22 companies from Japan; 18 companies from the United States; 15 companies from Germany; and 11 companies from South Korea.

In October last year, Mobis signed a memorandum of understanding with Sinclair and CAST.ERA to develop an ATSC3.0 broadcasting system for models sold in North America. CAST.ERA is an ATSC3.0 solutions company, a joint venture between Sinclair and SK Telecom. On January 20, Hyundai Mobis demonstrated the ATSC3.0 car address system in Washington DC and Baltimore, USA.

According to Hyundai Mobis, in this cooperation, Sinclair and CAST.ERA is responsible for the broadcast format and content output, and Mobis will provide the world’s first automatic configuration ATSC3.0 broadcast that can watch high-definition images while moving at high-speed Transceiver system. The antenna and low-noise amplifier (LNA) are installed on the front windshield of the car, and the module for ATSC 3.0 broadcasting is installed in the car to watch the high-definition video through the rear seat monitor.

Hyundai Mobis pointed out that models equipped with the ATSC3.0 system are expected to be popular in the medium and large SUV market where the demand for family cars is strong. Through this system, you can not only watch high-definition television, but also receive real-time warnings of disasters and emergencies and location-based advertising services.

Recently held in Las Vegas at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Hyundai Mobis demonstrated a prototype IONIC 5 equipped with e-corner module technology, which is capable of 90-degree steering at all four wheels and can complete special movements such as lateral driving and 360-degree turnaround in place.

The e-Corner integrates an electric motor, electric shock absorbers, brake by wire and steering by wire, making it a complete package that can be installed in a plug-in vehicle. The video shows that the purpose-built car can rotate all of its wheels 90 degrees in the same direction, enabling the car to perform any operation such as tank turns, crab rows, set circles, and diagonal rows.

The e-Corner is said to use four wheel motors, with braking and electronically controlled steering and electronic dampers integrated into each wheel unit, completely detached from the traditional chassis design and without the need for a steering column. Each wheel can be independently accelerated, braked and steered to achieve true four-wheel drive at will, and the system can be adapted to a wide range of vehicles from SUVs to mid-size compact cars.

The Look Up U8 also demonstrated lateral driving capability a short while ago, but works differently from the IONIC 5 prototype by carrying a McNamee wheel.

Hyundai Mobis Expo hasn’t released any other details about its e-Corner module, but it has huge potential to simplify the entire assembly process of electric vehicles, while also providing more maneuverability for drivers.

The technology was unveiled back in 2018, and Hyundai plans to have it optimized and matured by 2023, with a complete solution by 2025.

Mobis was founded in 1977, the full name is Hyundai Mobis (Hyundai mobis), as one of the three main Hyundai Kia Motors Group, is ranked seventh in the world’s auto parts suppliers, but also the 2018 Global Fortune 500 companies. As the largest auto parts company in South Korea, Hyundai Mobis has a wide range of businesses and there is almost no auto parts product that Hyundai Mobis is not involved in.
