Following Google’s plan to remove Theora codec format support from Chrome/Chromium browsers, Mozilla also plans to take similar measures to eliminate Theora from Firefox.

After inquiries, it is learned that Theora is a free and open lossy video compression format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The video codec was generally released to the public on November 3, 2008, primarily for online audio and video purposes.

According to a recent Mozilla survey, only about 0.09% of media load in Firefox is Theora content, and most web services have long since moved away from Theora to better alternatives such as VP9 and AV1 codecs. So, very few legacy services or other video sources require Theora.

Mozilla’s plan is to test disabling Theora in Firefox nightly builds, add a little telemetry to track demand if any Theora load attempts occur, wait a few Firefox release cycles before removing it during the testing phase, and then proceed in a similar way to Chrome’s Ways to remove Theora support from Firefox.

Google Meet, Google Hangouts, Zoom, Facebook Messenger and Discord, most of the video clients/applications on the Internet use Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC).

However, in the case of poor network connection signal, WebRTC may have the problem of packet loss, Mozilla in Firefox Nightly version, the default enabled ULPFEC and RED function, can reduce the packet loss situation, so as to improve the WebRTC video experience, the user in other versions can enable media. navigator.video.red_ulpfec_enabled experimental flag in other versions.

ULPFEC, known as Uneven Level Protection Forward Error Correction, is a technique used to recover lost or corrupted data from video streams and is one of the payload types supported by the MS-SDPEXT protocol and the OvenMediaEngine server.

Mozilla introduced a new flame icon to the private browsing window in the recently released Firefox Nightly version. Users can reset the current private browsing session after clicking it.

Note: Private Browsing is a useful feature of Firefox that can help you hide your network activities on your computer from other Firefox users, but it does not make you invisible online.

Firefox doesn’t save passwords, cookies, and history when you use a private window. If you download a file from a website, the file won’t appear in Firefox’s Download Manager, but it will still remain on your computer. Additionally, if you bookmark a website in a privacy window, it will remain in your bookmarks list.

Firefox users previously had to reset their session by closing the current window and then reopening it, but users can do the same thing after clicking this button.

There is also an option to uncheck “Always ask me” and activating the button will immediately reset the unchecked options, speeding up the reset.

It’s unclear when this feature will land on the stable version of Firefox. The current Nightly version number is 120, and the 120 stable version is planned to be released in late November 2023.

The preference browser.privatebrowsing.resetPBM.enabled defines whether this button appears in the Firefox toolbar, setting it to TRUE will display the icon, and setting it to FALSE will remove it.

According to media reports, a dangerous zero-day vulnerability was discovered in both Chrome and Firefox browsers, with the tracking number CVE-2023-5217, which will cause a buffer overflow in the VP8 codec. There is already evidence that hackers are exploiting it. This vulnerability launches an attack.

The Google security team stated that the vulnerability exists in the WebM file format, which means that browsers including Chrome, Firefox, software such as Skype, VLC, and supporting software from AMD, Nvidia, and Logitech may have vulnerabilities.

Google has released Chrome 117.0.5938.132 update, and Mozilla has released Firefox 118.0.1 update, which fixes the above vulnerability.

The browser war continues, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are in a life-and-death battle, and a foreign media stack diary recently stated that Mozilla’s Firefox browser has lost 7.4 million users in the past 12 months, and the total number of users fell by 3.92%.

It is reported that foreign media quoted Mozilla’s official Firefox Weekly data to confirm its view. From January 2019 to yesterday (August 2023), Firefox users fell by 30.3%.

Foreign media said that generally speaking, MAU (Retention Rate) shows a standard fluctuation state throughout the year, and there will be a certain decline in summer and holidays. This effect can be observed very clearly when comparing China and the United States. Both countries have noticeable declines from the beginning of late spring to early summer and the end of September, with the second-holiday decline in the US occurring in December/January (corresponding to the Christmas/New Year holidays) and the holiday decline in China In the middle and late February (corresponding to the Spring Festival).

However, foreign media said that the decline in Firefox users is more natural. In the past few years, there has not been much news surrounding Firefox. Among them, “the biggest story may be the layoffs announced by the company in 2020.”

Foreign media also attached the current browser market share information (as of February 2023):

Mozilla’s JavaScript team recently published a performance comparison between the Firefox browser Firefox and the Google browser Chrome on the Are we fast yet website.

The Mozilla team said that the Firefox browser has been continuously adjusted and optimized. In the SunSpider benchmark test, it has been ahead of the Chrome browser for two consecutive months.

Note: SunSpider is a synthetic benchmark test that mainly tests JavaScript performance. Its performance metrics are measured in execution time (in ms), where less time means faster.

However, in JetStream 2 (from Apple), another measure of JavaScript performance, although the Firefox browser has also improved, the gap with the Chrome browser has basically remained unchanged.

In addition, in the Speedometer running score that measures JavaScript throughput, the performance of the Firefox browser shows a downward trend, but the results slightly exceed the Chrome browser.

Mozilla recently issued a press release announcing that it will expand support for the Android version of the Firefox browser on addons.mozilla.org (AMO) in the next few months.

Mozilla said it will announce the exact launch date in September this year, and said it will allow the Android version of the Firefox browser to use desktop extensions before the end of this year.

Mozilla said that in the past few years, the development of Firefox for Android has focused on core functions and only supports a small number of extensions.

It is learned from the press release that Mozilla believes that the infrastructure of the Android version of Firefox has been basically stable after years of development, and the next step is to open the extension system to meet the individual needs of mobile users.

Giorgio Natili, director of browser engineering at Firefox, said: “The mobile browser space can unlock a lot of creative potential. Mozilla wants to provide the best support for developers so that they can build web extensions suitable for the mobile era.”

Firefox will be the only mainstream Android browser to support an open extension ecosystem, Mozilla said.
