More and more cell phone manufacturers promise to provide long-term support for their devices, such as three to five years of operating system or security updates. Dutch company Fairphone provides support for a longer period of time, this year was reported that the company has pushed Android 13 to its Fairphone 3 and 3 +, and now the official also launched the official version of Android 13 for the Fairphone 4.

The Fairphone 4 was released in October 2021, the main upgrade points include a larger display, better optical camera module, 5G support, IP54 dust and splash-proof and MIL810G certification, USB-C interface, larger battery capacity, 20W fast charging, etc. Specific parameters are as follows:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G
  • Display: 6.3″ 1080 x 2340 resolution LCD display, 19.5:9 ratio
  • Front Camera: 48MP 0.8µm wide angle + 48MP 0.8µm ultra wide-angle + ToF 3D
  • OS: Android 11 (currently updated to Android 13)
  • RAM: 6GB or 8GB
  • ROM: 128GB or 256GB
  • Weight: 225 grams
  • Battery capacity: 3905 mAh

The Fairphone 4 is said to have a modular design, consisting of seven modules, and is claimed to be “easier to repair than most smartphones”, with “no tools required to remove the back of the phone and replace the battery”.

In fact, at the end of last year, XDA developers released a version of Android 13 for the Fairphone 4, and it took about 10 months for the Fairphone officials to catch up, but to be fair, the officially supported update has to be better than the unofficial one in terms of stability, security and performance.

The Fairphone 5 smartphone has been released in the form of the Fairphone 5, which it claims to be the most sustainable smartphone to date.

The front of the Fairphone 5 features a 6.46-inch Full HD+ Dynamic 90Hz OLED screen with a Pixelworks processor for image enhancement and adaptive colour.

A perforated 50-megapixel front-facing camera is centred on the top, while the back also features a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.

Officials say that 70% of the materials used in the phone, including gold, lithium and tungsten, are recycled from reliable sources, and that the phone is 100% e-waste neutral, ensuring that an equal amount of e-waste is collected and recycled for every phone produced.

Inside the phone is a Qualcomm QCM6490 octa-core processor that offers up to 8 years of security support; the phone is powered by Android 13 and has no pre-installed apps, confirming that there will be at least 5 Android version updates by 2031.

Another highlight of the phone is its modularity, with officials saying that it offers more interchangeable parts than its predecessor, making it easier for users to repair and replace them on their own.

The Fairphone 5 handset is estimated to start shipping on September 14, in three colours – sky blue, grey or transparent – and will be priced at 699 euros (currently about RMB 5,564), and is already available for pre-order on the official website.

The Fairphone 2 is probably one of the longest officially supported phones, having been launched in 2015 with Android 5.1 pre-installed.

After more than seven years and 43 software updates, the Fairphone 2 received the last patch update of its life cycle.

The company says that today’s software update for Android 10 will be the last for the phone, which has lasted more than seven years, even though the original goal was to support “three to five years” of updates for the phone.

Fairphone has previously said that providing updates over such a long period of time has not been easy and that the bigger challenge has come from Qualcomm’s side. As of December last year, Qualcomm provided three major OS updates and four years of security updates for its chips. Once that support ends, however, manufacturers like Fairphone will be on their own if they want to continue updating their phones.

The configuration, Fairphone 2 phone with Snapdragon 801 chip, 5-inch 1920×1080 resolution IPS LCD screen, 2GB LPDDR3 memory, 32GB eMMC 5 storage, front 8MP camera, rear 12MP camera, built-in removable 2420mAh battery, with USB 2.0 The body measures 143x73x11mm and weighs 168 grams.
