Fairphone 5 is released, with 8 years of security support and 5 Android updates

The Fairphone 5 smartphone has been released in the form of the Fairphone 5, which it claims to be the most sustainable smartphone to date.

The front of the Fairphone 5 features a 6.46-inch Full HD+ Dynamic 90Hz OLED screen with a Pixelworks processor for image enhancement and adaptive colour.

A perforated 50-megapixel front-facing camera is centred on the top, while the back also features a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.

Officials say that 70% of the materials used in the phone, including gold, lithium and tungsten, are recycled from reliable sources, and that the phone is 100% e-waste neutral, ensuring that an equal amount of e-waste is collected and recycled for every phone produced.

Inside the phone is a Qualcomm QCM6490 octa-core processor that offers up to 8 years of security support; the phone is powered by Android 13 and has no pre-installed apps, confirming that there will be at least 5 Android version updates by 2031.

Another highlight of the phone is its modularity, with officials saying that it offers more interchangeable parts than its predecessor, making it easier for users to repair and replace them on their own.

The Fairphone 5 handset is estimated to start shipping on September 14, in three colours – sky blue, grey or transparent – and will be priced at 699 euros (currently about RMB 5,564), and is already available for pre-order on the official website.
