The E3 Game Show was originally scheduled to hold its first offline exhibition in four years (E3 2023) this summer, but it had to cancel the event in March because it did not receive enough support from game manufacturers.

In June of this year, the Los Angeles City Tourism Bureau stated that E3 in 2024 and 2025 had been cancelled. Although the organizer Entertainment Software Association (ESA) stated that this was not the final decision, the once glorious E3 game show has now declined.

According to foreign media gamesindustry.biz, ReedPop, the event operator of the E3 game show, and the organizer ESA confirmed that “they have terminated the contract early”, and ReedPop will no longer participate in E3-related affairs.

It is found that although it has not yet been determined whether the 2024 E3 game show will be held officially, even if the game station is successfully held, it is not expected to be in the “familiar Los Angeles Convention Center”, and ESA has previously declared that they will be committed to The E3 2025 show will be completely revamped, but specific plans are not yet known.

The former E3 game show had constant twists and turns. It was canceled in 2020, changed to an online exhibition in 2021, and canceled again in 2022 due to issues with manufacturer participation and the epidemic.

Affected by the previous volatile situation, this year many important game console developers and game manufacturers (including Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, and Sega) have announced that they will no longer participate in the exhibition and will instead hold their own press conferences to reduce costs and Attract fans to come and watch as much as possible.

The E3 gaming show, which was scheduled to be held physically in Los Angeles this June, has been canceled. This is the first time since 2019 that the summer event in the gaming world has returned to an offline event, but it had to be called off because game majors such as Nintendo, Microsoft, Ubisoft and Tencent said they would not be attending.

The original date of E3 2023 was June 13 to 16, with some days open to industry insiders and some days open to the public. But before June, there are some worrying signs that the return of E3 may be in trouble.

According to an email to employees confirmed by IGN, E3 2023 “did not receive enough sustained attention to proceed in a manner that would showcase the size, strength and impact of our industry.”

Kyle Marsden-Kish, vice president of global games at organizer ReedPop, wrote in an email to The Verge

This was a tough decision because we and our partners have worked so hard to make this event a success, but we had to do what was right for the industry and right for E3. We appreciate and understand that those companies interested did not have a playable demo ready and had resource challenges that prevented them from overcoming the hurdles of attending E3 this summer. For those companies that have committed to E3 2023, we are sorry we cannot provide you with the event experience you deserve and that you have come to expect from ReedPop.

Marsden-Kish concluded his email by stating that ReedPop and ESA will continue to work together on future E3 events, hinting that the show could be relaunched in the next few years.

In January, IGN reported that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony would not be attending the show, and Nintendo and Microsoft later confirmed this. During an earnings call in February, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot hinted that E3 might not take place at all, though ReedPop confirmed to The Verge that the event was still on. Ubisoft later said it would attend the show, but then backtracked, and IGN also reported in March that Sega and Tencent wouldn’t be at E3 either.

Nevertheless, there are still plenty of gaming events in June, with Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest taking place on June 8 and live Play Days returning this year, and Microsoft’s annual Xbox Showcase and Starfield-focused showcase scheduled for June 11. Ubisoft’s live Ubisoft Forward Live is scheduled for the following day, June 12.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has finalized the dates for next year’s E3 game show, which will be held back in the City of Angels – Los Angeles. E3 will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center for four days, June 13-16, 2023.

In addition, the E3 Games Show will host a “Partner Digital Event” starting June 11 and continuing through the end of the show. This is a return to offline events after three years since the New Champions Epidemic E3 was canceled in 2020.

Owned by ESA, E3 will be operated next year by ReedPop, the event production company behind PAX, EGX, New York Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration and other events, which is handling E3 for the first time.

Organizers announced that E3 2022 will feature separate industry and consumer days and spaces. E3 Business Days will be held June 13-15, which organizers of the gaming show say is “reserved for registered industry personnel to meet face-to-face, hold professional meetings and connect with licensees and distributors.

E3 Gamer Days will take place on Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16 in separate halls from the industry section, inviting consumers to experience the future of gaming firsthand and meet developers, content creators, media personalities and more. A content theater, open exclusively to ticket holders, will run on these dates and provide insight into the highly anticipated title.

In a statement, Kyle Marsden-Kish, vice president of games at ReedPop, said, “E3 is one of the few opportunities for the global gaming industry to come together, come together, and show the world what it is creating. Our vision is to re-unite the industry by rebuilding the traditional E3 week, bringing back that spark and restoring E3’s role as a truly magical global showcase event for game creators and consumers alike.”
