Today, the Galaxy S23 family started selling worldwide. As expected, the Galaxy S23 Ultra became a fan favorite thanks to its new 200-megapixel camera that takes better pictures compared to other members of the same family. Samsung has always been great when it comes to camera experience and has been since the days of the S7 Edge, however, DxOMark thinks otherwise.

DxOMark, an independent testing organization known for testing many devices but controversial for stirring up many heated discussions on various forums about their smartphone camera scores, has now tested the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and some users may not agree with the results.

The good thing is that DxOMark still appreciates the new Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera, highlighting how the device offers consistent camera performance across all features, excellent photo rendering with high detail levels, excellent autofocus for video and audio, and zoom performance at longer distances.

However, DxOMark also talks about the loss of image detail in the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera when shooting in low light, as well as shutter lag and erratic exposure and focus when the scene is backlit.

The summary of the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera has more pros than cons. However, the camera scores 140/149 overall, which does sound good, but it comes in at 10th in the global rankings and ultra-high-end rankings.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is tied for 10th place with the Google Pixel 7 and the Vivo X90 Pro+. And the number one spot goes to the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, followed by the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

Back in the month of September, Chinese tech giants launched their next-generation flagship device, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro. This device became available first in China before making its way to other regions, hence delaying its appearance on DXOMARK rankings. But a few weeks ago, the smartphone testing platform announced that it finally has the device and will commence testing immediately.

The results of that test are out and Huawei is back in the top spot after being shoved to the side by the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate early this year. Devices such as the Google Pixel 7 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pros also clung to top places with a score of 147 and 146 respectively. Now, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro is in the top place in the camera ranking after intensive testing b the team at DXOMARK. The device pulled through the test with a score of 149 placings itself two points ahead of the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate and the Google Pixel 7 Pro.

DXOMARK is still yet to release the test result in selfie and display ranking for the Mate 50 Pro. Some specifications of the Huawei Mate 50 Pro camera system are a triple rear setup housing a 50MP main lens, 13MP ultra-wide, and 64MP telephoto lens. There is also a viable aperture on the main camera for controlling the amount of light that comes into the camera lens, hence creating depth to images the smartphone takes.

The camera system draws processing power from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4G flagship SoC. It is great to see the competitive spirit of devices in the smartphone market, especially when it comes to photography. Now, we will wait for the launch of next-generation flagship smartphones to see which one is ready to take the DXOMARK photography ranking crown from Huawei.

DXOMARK image quality department has confirmed the arrival of the Huawei Mate 50 Pro in their office for testing. This device is a photography beast with tons of features that aid pictures it takes to stand out from the crowd. The big question is, will this device be able to reclaim the photography crown of Huawei from top devices like the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate and the Google Pixel 7 Pro?

Topping DXOMARK’s camera ranking is the Pixel 7 Pro and Honor Magic 4 Ultimate, both sharing the same score. Following closely are the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, both of which have a score of 146 leaving them in 3rd and 4th place. Sitting comfortably in 5th place is the Huawei P50 Pro from last year, it holds a score of 143.

The race for supremacy in the mobile photography world is competitive, and the Google Pixel 7 Pro excels under tests. According to DxOMark, the new Pro model in Google’s flagship smartphone line-up for 2022 is a champion to a certain degree. Shockingly, the Pixel 7 Pro scores even more than the iPhone 14 Pro under standard mobile photography tests.

Earlier in the year on April 22, the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate became official and took the top spot as the reigning champion in smartphone photography from Huawei. At the time, the Huawei P50 Pro was holding the top spot in mobile photography with a score of 143. But the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate after going through intensive camera testing came out with a score of 147 snatching the top spot away from camera kings, Huawei.

With the launch of the Google Pixel 7 Pro, a new top competitor came into the mobile photography department. This device shares the same camera score as the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate but occupies the top spot since it is a new device. At a camera score of 147, this new Pixel device performs better than the iPhone 14 Pro with a score of 146.

For now, the list of top smartphone cameras by DxOMark might still topple over, since other flagship devices are yet to go through testing. The likes of the Huawei Mate 50 Pro can alter the rankings since the Chinese tech giant has been a constant appearance on the top smartphone camera list. Another honourable mention that can as well alter the rankings is the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

DXOMARK, the international leader in the evaluation of the quality of smartphone image/camera, audio, screen and battery products, as well as other consumer electronics products, today announces the update of its smartphone testing benchmarks and scoring system, with the aim of bringing its scientific evaluation system closer to users, in line with technological trends. Under the updated benchmarking and scoring system, all current scores will be updated from 21 September 2022, French time.

The new DXOMARK benchmarks are designed to be closer to the user and are based on real-life use cases. At the same time, DXOMARK continues to keep pace with technological developments, evaluating the latest technology in devices, regardless of whether it is already being used on a large scale. In order to make the scientific results and technical content more readable and accessible to the general public, all DXOMARK scores are based on real-life benchmarks and include tests on the daily use of the devices in different scenarios and environments.

In order to make the scoring system more transparent and consistent, the scoring criteria and benchmark formulas for each benchmark, including image/selfie, audio, screen and battery, are now publicly available, and a geometric average is also used to reward more balanced performance. With this update, DXOMARK hopes to further inform every user of the professionalism and transparency behind the scoring.

Frédéric Guichard, CEO of DXOMARK, said: “Technology innovation is on a fast track worldwide, and the smartphone industry, which is emblematic of this, is never slowing down and is constantly embracing new scenarios, technological breakthroughs and user experience-driven trends. The smartphone industry has never slowed down. In this process, only technologies that are truly meaningful to users can better empower them, provide benchmarks for manufacturers and help the industry to innovate and develop. In this context, DXOMARK will continue to update our benchmarks to assess the quality of devices that are truly relevant to users, measure real-life scenarios and analyze new trends in technology to realize our vision of promoting meaningful and useful technology for end users.”

Newly upgraded test benchmarks: one step closer to the user

The smartphone image, screen, audio, battery and selfie benchmarks and the new scoring system have been developed and upgraded by DXOMARK’s team of engineers over the course of a year.

The image benchmarks have been updated to focus on the user, adding user-relevant use cases for common scenarios such as group photos of friends and family and low-light shots. In addition, DXOMARK has further improved the test methodology by extending the zoom scoring to include a range of focal lengths in both photo and video zoom tests, further enriching the zoom test scenarios. New lab settings have been added, enabling real-life scenes to be reproduced in the lab and testing HDR modes for portraits and moving objects. New AI-driven metrics have been added, with the ability to perform noise and texture AI metrics for photographs and videos on real-life scenes/objects. In addition, the new test benchmark uses international focus groups to better reflect user preferences and assess the camera’s low-light performance.

Updates to the audio test benchmark focus on user pain points. Two new tests, audio zoom and wind noise have been added to the recording section. In addition, more objective tests have been added to increase the proportion of the audio test signal in the total score. Custom audio test tracks are now available for perceptual analysis and the new playlists are not only representative of daily user usage, but also further improve the accuracy of DXOMARK audio assessments.

First public disclosure of scoring criteria: a more transparent and unified technical interpretation to keep users and technology up to date

This is also the first time that DXOMARK has made its scoring algorithm structure publicly available. All test benchmarks are based on consumer usage scenarios, and the weighting of the scores is determined by scientific research on consumer mobile phone usage. In addition to the benchmark updates, the algorithm for all DXOMARK scores will change from an arithmetic average to a geometric average to emphasize the balanced performance of devices, with models optimized for specific use cases struggling to achieve high scores. Based on the latest test benchmarks and scoring algorithms, the existing DXOMARK scores for smartphone devices will also change accordingly.

The DXOMARK rankings have also undergone some changes due to updated test benchmarks, the inclusion of new usage scenarios and improvements to the test methodology.

Here are the latest top 10 smartphones.

DXOMARK held an online launch of its test benchmark and scoring system update, releasing a new test benchmark and scoring system for 2022, as well as updated rankings for smartphone images, screen, audio and battery. Based on the updated image scoring test benchmarks, DXOMARK re-ranked the Top 10 smartphone images.

Specifically, under the new V5 scoring standard, the Honor Magic 4 Supreme Edition and Huawei P50 Pro still ranked first and second on the list. iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max scored a big increase under the new mechanism, scoring 141 points and ranking third.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra, on the other hand, scored 2 points lower than the previous V4 standard, coming in seventh on the list with 136 points. The camera was previously ranked fifth in the DXOMARK global image rankings.

It is worth mentioning that Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun previously said that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra would not be sent to DXOMARK for testing, while DXOMARK said that it always adheres to professional and considerable standards and would purchase the Xiaomi 12S Ultra for testing on its own expense.

In addition, DXOMARK also reiterated that “we don’t sell scores or lists” that the business model is to sell lab and technical reports, and that how scores are published depends only on the quality of the product itself and is not affected by whether the manufacturer chooses a review service.
