In 2020, Apple announced the transition of Mac processors from Intel to its own Apple Silicon, and several Mac devices are already equipped with M-series chips. But during the transition to allow applications to run on the M-series chips, Apple introduced an analog solution called “Rosetta 2”.

Australian security researcher Dougall Johnson recently discovered an undisclosed extension to Rosetta 2 that simplifies the process of storing parity and tuning flags within the application after digging into it. He says this could make simulations more accurate and faster.

What’s even more surprising about this extension is that it originated with the second processor released by Intel, the 8080 processor released by Intel in 1974.

This ancient 8-bit microprocessor handled these adjustments and parity storage very specifically and this feature is always present in today’s Intel processors. Even the latest Core i9-13900K is directly related to the processor that powered some computers nearly 50 years ago.

Bits 26 and 27 in ARM’s flag register are dedicated to this process, except that these two bits are only assigned to this action when Rosetta 2 is active.

Rosetta 2 will not activate by default unless it detects that a program is made with an Intel-based Mac, reassigning these two bits and allowing Rosetta 2 to work at its usual fast pace.

Intel insists it can make Apple its customer again, with one executive saying the company can win Apple back despite the success of Apple Silicon. Most of Apple’s Mac range has moved away from Intel’s chips, with all but one of the computers carrying the Apple Sillion.

Despite the possibility that Apple could eventually switch to Apple Silicon altogether and abandon Intel chips, the processor maker still thinks it has a shot in Apple’s favor.

According to a post on Twitter by Ian Cutress, during Tuesday’s Intel Innovation event, Michelle Johnston Holthaus, executive vice president of Intel’s customer computing group, commented on Intel’s chip efforts while also mentioning Apple.

As part of his comments, Holthaus insisted that Intel will never stop trying to get Apple as a customer again. It is unclear what else Holthaus said on the subject at the time, except that Intel wants everyone to have high performance.

Holthaus’ comments aren’t the only comments Intel’s top executives have made about its deteriorating relationship with Apple since the launch of Apple Silicon.

In an interview in October 2021, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger insisted that it would never give up hope of restoring the Mac on Intel processors, but it would have to do so by creating better chips.

“Apple decided they could make a better chip themselves than we could,” Gelsinger said, “and you know, they do a good job. So what I had to do was create a better chip than they could do on their own.”

As Intel continues to work on its foundry services, there is always the opportunity for Apple to use Intel to produce its chips, much like the existing TSMC. in late 2021, Intel is reportedly trying to seek a partnership from Apple for potential future chip production.

This approach would not necessarily involve using Intel-designed chips, but would still be more business for Intel itself.

VMware has released a technical preview of Fusion 22H2 for Mac users. This free virtualization software for macOS brings long-awaited Windows 11 support to Apple Silicon and Intel, enabling Macs to run Microsoft’s latest operating system side-by-side with macOS.

Here’s what’s new in the VMware Fusion 22H2 Technology Preview.

Windows 11 on Intel and Apple Silicon with 2D graphics and network support

VMTools installation supports M1-based Windows 11 client OS on Mac.

Virtual TPM devices provide fast encryption support.

Improved Linux support on M1.

3D graphics hardware acceleration and OpenGL 4.3 on Linux virtual machines.

Universal binaries for Apple Silicon and Intel Mac.

With VMware Fusion 22H2 Technology Preview, Mac users can create Windows 11 hardware-compliant virtual machines.

Fusion now supports TPM 2.0, the Virtual Trusted Platform module with fast encryption, providing better performance and a secure enclave for sensitive data (there is also an option to fully encrypt a virtual machine).

In addition, to support TPM 2.0, VMware Fusion 22H2 brings a WDDM driver for 2D graphics that allows users to operate Windows virtual machines at high screen resolutions.
