Intel insists it can make Apple its customer again, with one executive saying the company can win Apple back despite the success of Apple Silicon. Most of Apple’s Mac range has moved away from Intel’s chips, with all but one of the computers carrying the Apple Sillion.
Despite the possibility that Apple could eventually switch to Apple Silicon altogether and abandon Intel chips, the processor maker still thinks it has a shot in Apple’s favor.
According to a post on Twitter by Ian Cutress, during Tuesday’s Intel Innovation event, Michelle Johnston Holthaus, executive vice president of Intel’s customer computing group, commented on Intel’s chip efforts while also mentioning Apple.
As part of his comments, Holthaus insisted that Intel will never stop trying to get Apple as a customer again. It is unclear what else Holthaus said on the subject at the time, except that Intel wants everyone to have high performance.
Holthaus’ comments aren’t the only comments Intel’s top executives have made about its deteriorating relationship with Apple since the launch of Apple Silicon.
In an interview in October 2021, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger insisted that it would never give up hope of restoring the Mac on Intel processors, but it would have to do so by creating better chips.
“Apple decided they could make a better chip themselves than we could,” Gelsinger said, “and you know, they do a good job. So what I had to do was create a better chip than they could do on their own.”
As Intel continues to work on its foundry services, there is always the opportunity for Apple to use Intel to produce its chips, much like the existing TSMC. in late 2021, Intel is reportedly trying to seek a partnership from Apple for potential future chip production.
This approach would not necessarily involve using Intel-designed chips, but would still be more business for Intel itself.
