Apple CEO Tim Cook (Tim Cook) in the latest quarterly conference call, Apple did not launch any new iPad products this year, also implied that Apple will not launch a new iPad in November or December.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman writes in the latest edition of the newsletter that Apple plans to refresh its entire iPad lineup in 2024, which means we’ll see a new iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and a new entry-level iPad.

Apple could have tried to launch more new products, but the revamped iPad and AirPods aren't ready yet. The company plans to refresh its entire iPad lineup in 2024. New low-end AirPods are also due next year, with an updated Pro model coming in 2025.

When each iPad model was last updated:

  • iPad Pro: October 2022
  • iPad: October 2022
  • iPad Air: March 2022
  • iPad mini: September 2021

Existing leaks indicate that the mid-range and low-end iPads could be updated as early as March 2024; the new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with M3 chips and OLED displays will be launched in the first half of 2024; and the next-generation iPad Air and iPad mini, which could be equipped with M2 and A16 Bionic chips respectively, are expected to arrive sometime in 2024. The next-generation iPad Air and iPad mini will likely come with M2 and A16 Bionic chips, respectively.

Apple today announced its financial report for the fourth fiscal quarter of fiscal year 2023 (Q3 2023), in which iPad business revenue was US$6.4 billion, compared with US$7.2 billion in the same period last year, a decrease of 11% %.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a subsequent conference call that with no new iPad products launched in 2023, revenue from the product is expected to “decelerate significantly” next quarter.

Tim Cook said that although iPad business revenue fell 11% year-on-year, the iPad still set the “gold standard” for tablets.

Tim Cook said that due to tight supply chains in 2022, a lot of pent-up demand was released and satisfied in the third quarter of last year, so comparisons of various sales data this year will be “ugly.”

Tim Cook admitted that Apple will not launch any new iPad products this year, and almost confirmed that Apple will not launch a new iPad in November or December. The content is as follows:

We expect year-over-year revenue performance for iPad and Wearables, Home and Accessories to slow materially from Q3 as we adjust the timing of product launches.

On iPad, we launched the new iPad Pro and 10th generation iPad in Q4 last year.

Apple’s latest iPad products are the M2 iPad Pro and iPad 10 released in October 2022; the iPad Air 5 will be released in March 2022; in addition, the iPad mini has not been updated since September 2021.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in the latest “Power On” newsletter that Apple plans to launch a new iPad around March 2024.

Mark Gurman explained that the new Apple Pencil is equipped with a USB-C port, which is to match the iPad that will be updated next spring. He also added that Apple has been developing the 11th-generation iPad, seventh-generation iPad mini, and sixth-generation iPad Air for some time.

Apple is likely to release the three new iPads mentioned above in March, and a next-generation iPad Pro is also possible, but only a few “minor” iPad updates appear to be confirmed for next spring.

It is noted that Mark Gurman also said that he expects the first-generation Apple Pencil to be discontinued along with the ninth-generation iPad, because by then Apple will no longer sell any new iPads with a Lightning interface. However, this change won’t happen “any time soon.”

Investment bank Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring (Erik Woodring) recently released a market research report, predicting that in the fourth quarter of 2023, Apple’s iPad business revenue fell significantly.

The agency estimated that this quarter’s iPad business revenue was $7.2 billion (currently about RMB 52.632 billion), compared with $9.4 billion (currently about 68.714 billion) in the same period last year, a decline of 23%.

Erik Woodring said Apple updated the iPad Pro models and launched the 10th-generation iPad last October, while sources say Apple will release the iPad Air, iPad mini, and 11th-generation iPad this week, so the sales figures are not directly comparable.

A number of sources, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, don’t think Apple will unveil a new iPad this week, while others say it will choose to unveil a new iPad tomorrow, so it’s impossible to tell which side of the story is true or false until an official announcement is made by Apple.

Apple hasn’t released any new iPads this year, and if it still chooses not to, it would be the first calendar year in its 13-year history that Apple hasn’t released a new iPad.

Majin Bu, AppleTrack and other sources tweeted today that Apple will launch the 11th generation iPad on October 18, which will follow the design of the previous generation and be perfectly compatible with existing accessories.

Note: This news is different from last week’s news. Japanese blog Mac Otakara believes that Apple is more likely to release a third-generation Apple Pencil rather than a new iPad.

Rather than an update to the iPad itself, the blog says it’s more likely to launch an Apple Pencil 3 with a replaceable magnetic tip.

Last month, tipster Majin Bu claimed that the new Apple Pencil would have a replaceable magnetic tip for drawing, technical drawing, and digital painting.

Taking Apple’s iPhone 15 series models as an example, Majin Bu has made many accurate reports and the credibility is high, but we will have to wait and see whether Apple will launch it tomorrow.

Astropad announced the launch of a new Darkboard drawing accessory designed specifically for Apple iPad, priced at $120 (currently about RMB 869).

The Darkboard is made of rigid foam and weighs 1.4 pounds (about 635.6 grams), and the foam is designed to provide cushioning and support for arms and wrists.

According to Astropad, the Darkboard is perfect for use on couches, beds, and other situations where ideal ergonomics are not possible.

In addition, the accessory has a small stand on the back that holds the iPad at any angle, so the Darkboard can be used in multiple directions.

In detail, there is a 1mm space between the iPad’s display and the edge of the foam body to ensure the iPad doesn’t break.

Darkboard is available in two sizes, one for the third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro or newer, and the other for the 11-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air, and can be purchased from Astropad’s official website for $120 (currently about RMB 869).

According to the list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), Apple has recently obtained a new patent No. US 20230168711 A1, which designs off-screen Face ID for iPhone and iPad.

The patent, titled “Electronic Devices with Under-Screen Cameras,” shows a technology patent that hides front-facing cameras, light sensors, and other components under the screen.

The relevant design sketches of the patent are as follows. Figure 2 shows the punch-hole design of the current iPhone; Figure 3 shows the future iPhone design, with the TrueDepth camera system hidden under the screen.

Components such as the front camera can be installed under the screen, and the light penetrates the surface of the screen through multiple apertures, reaches the front viewfinder, and finally conducts and generates pictures.

A functional block diagram of the device (#1200) including restoration optics #1220 for reducing image distortion caused by display #1210 is shown in Figure 12 below.

According to the latest research of Omdia’s “Tablet and Laptop Display Panel and OEM Market Tracking Report”, the portable computer panel (The report includes laptops and tablets) will be in 2022. Total shipments reached 479 million units. Not only was this the first time since 2020 that annual shipments fell below 500 million units, but it was also the first time since 2019 that shipments fell 16% year-over-year.

After experiencing rapid growth in the previous three years, the market demand for portable computers will continue to cool down in 2022.

Except for Apple, most portable computer brands will see a double-digit year-on-year decline in panel purchases in 2022. Apple will purchase a total of 99 million portable computer panels in 2022, but it is still a year-on-year decrease of 4%, and Apple has been the largest purchaser of portable computer panels since 2017. Thanks to the strong growth of iPad and MacBook products, Apple’s share of portable computer panel purchases has increased from an average of 17% in the previous year to 21% in 2022, breaking through 20% for the first time. In terms of application products, Apple will purchase 27 million display panels for notebook computers and 72 million display panels for tablet computers in 2022. Apple’s laptop panel suppliers include BOE, LG Display and Sharp.

Lenovo, the world’s second-largest purchaser of portable computer panels, has purchased a total of 55 million units in 2022 after experiencing the impact of slow growth in the tablet PC business, a year-on-year decrease of 29% to 11%. Lenovo procured 45 million display panels for notebooks and 10 million display panels for tablets in 2022. In order to reduce the risk of display panel supplier monopoly, Lenovo has many years of cooperation with all portable computer display panel manufacturers. Recently, Lenovo has continued to deepen cooperation with Chinese display panel suppliers.

In terms of laptop display panels, Lenovo will be the largest purchaser in 2022 with 45 million units, followed by Dell with 35 million units and HP with 33 million units. Hewlett-Packard has been the largest buyer of display panels for notebook computers for many years. Under the policy of strict inventory control and reduced procurement plans, HP will fall from the world’s largest notebook computer panel purchaser in 2022 and relegate to third place. Looking forward to 2023, the overall performance of the global portable computer market is still poor. The procurement strategies of notebook computer display panels of various brands tend to be conservative, and the forecasts are all reduced to the lowest. Guaranteeing and strategically partnering notebook display panel volumes will be a top priority in 2023.

In terms of tablet display panels, Apple’s iPad will be the largest purchaser in 2022 with 72 million units, followed by Samsung with 29 million units, Amazon with 14 million units and Lenovo with 10 million units. The top four tablet panel buyers all saw year-on-year declines in purchases in 2022. After Apple adopts an inventory digestion strategy, the procurement of iPad panels in the first half of 2023 will continue to be weak.

According to the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) public list, Apple recently obtained a technology patent involving the collaborative creation of virtual works on the iPad, No. US 11625136 B2.

The patent, titled “System, Method, and Computer Readable Media for Managing Virtual Work Collaboration on Multiple Devices,” allows one or more users to collaborate on the creation of virtual artworks on two or more electronic devices.

Attached is the abstract of Apple’s patent as follows:

"This patent provides systems, methods, and computer-readable media for managing the collaboration of virtual artworks among multiple electronic devices.

A first graphical display system of a first device may respond to user information and generate an input command and share the input command with a second graphical display system of a second device.

The first graphic display system may process the shared input command and the canvas of the first device and the second device generates pixel array data. By sharing input commands instead of pixel array data, system latency can be reduced.

Although operating on the same artwork, the user interface and graphics processing capabilities of each device may differ, thus providing greater expressiveness to the user."
