It is reported that the next generation iPad Pro will use an OLED display for the first time. This news is supported by the first beta code of iPadOS 17.5. Digging through the code, 9to5Mac discovered four unreleased iPad models, with information explicitly mentioning the new display technology.

It is noticed that the beta code contains display firmware information for four new iPads: iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5 and iPad16,6. It is speculated that these four models should belong to the next generation iPad Pro, which will be available in 11-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes and support Wi-Fi and cellular network connections.

Notably, the beta firmware information suggests that these iPads will feature OLED displays, while hinting at possible differences between vendors for different screen sizes. A previous report from display analysis agency DSCC also mentioned that the release of the new iPad may be delayed due to mass production issues with the new display. According to reports, LG will provide OLED panels for all 12.9-inch iPad Pros, while the 11-inch version may have screens provided by both LG and Samsung.

In addition to the new iPad Pro, the much-anticipated Apple Pencil will also receive an update. Earlier this month, 9to5Mac discovered a new gesture operation for Apple Pencil – squeeze – in the iPadOS 17.5 beta code. And now, they’ve found more evidence pointing to the existence of a new generation of Apple Pencil. In addition to the Squeeze gesture, LongSqueeze and DoubleSqueeze gestures were also spotted in the beta. Since the current Apple Pencil 2 only supports two taps and does not have the function of sensing pressure, it is speculated that these new gestures are specially designed for the upcoming new Apple Pencil. At the same time, the iPadOS 17.4 beta code also hints that the new Apple Pencil will support the “Find” function.

Bloomberg previously reported that Apple plans to release new iPad Pro and iPad Air, as well as redesigned Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 3 in the second week of May.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously revealed that Apple will release the OLED iPad Pro and 2024 iPad Air models in May this year, while DSCC CEO Ross Young believes it will be in April. .

Multiple iPad models have appeared on the Indian BIS certification website, with model numbers A2836, A2837, A2898, and A2899, confirming that these new models are ready for sale in India.

For reference, the existing 6th generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro models are A2436, A2437, A2764, and A2766, and the 4th generation 11-inch iPad Pro models are A2759, A2761, A2435, and A2762.

According to supply chain sources, Samsung Display and LG Display have started shipping OLED iPad panels in February this year. The original plan was for LGD to exclusively supply 12.9/13-inch panels, with LGD and SDC sharing orders for 11/11.1-inch panels.

Later, it was reported that due to reasons such as reduced yield rates, OLED panel prices remained high, resulting in reduced demand. Therefore, only SDC supplies 11-inch panels; and the latest news is that LGD is expected to start shipping 11-inch panels from March.

Referring to previous reports, LG Display is the supplier of OLED displays for the 13-inch iPad Pro, with a production capacity of 4.5 million units this year. Considering that the price of a 12.9-inch panel is US$380~390, the transaction price is expected to be US$1.755 billion (currently approximately 12.636 billion RMB).

In addition, Samsung Display is said to be an OLED supplier of 11-inch models, with a production capacity of about 4 million units this year, and a supply scale expected to be US$1.16 billion (currently about 8.352 billion RMB). Currently, Samsung and LG have each begun mass production of Apple iPad Pro panels on their 6th generation OLED production lines.

A number of third-party protective cases for iPad Air/Pro 2024 have appeared on Amazon in recent days, all of which show that they will be “available on March 26.”

Therefore, there are rumors that Apple’s 2024 iPad Air/Pro tablet is expected to be released on March 26, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman bluntly stated that this statement is “untrue.”

However, Mark Gurman also mentioned before that Apple plans to release new iPad Pro and iPad Air models “around the end of March or April.”

It was previously reported that LG Display is the supplier of OLED displays for the 13-inch iPad Pro, with a production capacity of 4.5 million units this year. According to Korean media Korea Herald, the OLED screen designed for Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro will begin mass production in February 2024.

Citing the media report that LG Display’s factory in Paju, Gyeonggi Province plans to mass-produce OLED screens as soon as February next year to meet Apple’s iPad Pro demand, which is about three months earlier than previously expected.

Reports say that the single-piece price of these screens is three times the price of an iPhone, so switching to the client, Apple may increase the price of iPad products.

The current 11-inch iPad Pro has an LCD panel, while the 12.9-inch model has a mini-LED backlight for increased brightness and higher contrast. OLED technology will eliminate the need for backlights, with benefits including higher contrast and deeper blacks, lower power consumption and more.

Apple is expected to use a very thin hybrid OLED display that combines flexible and rigid materials, which could reduce the thickness of the next iPad Pro models.

In addition to OLED display technology, the next iPad Pro model is expected to feature a slightly larger screen, an M3 chip, and a redesigned Magic Control accessory.

According to the Chosun Ilbo, LG Display and Samsung Display have entered the final stage of negotiations with Apple. They plan to start producing OLED panels for the next generation iPad Pro models around February 2024. The original plan has been brought forward.

Some analysts say its quotation range is three times that of existing mobile phone OLED panels. However, since the OLED panel market for tablets is still in its infancy and supply is limited compared to smartphones, shipments are expected to be around 10 million units.

“(LG Display) can supply 6 million iPad OLED panels next year and is expected to achieve sales of 2.3 trillion won and operating profit of 120 billion won,” KB Securities said, “partially offsetting the decline in the company’s profitability.”

This means that LG Display will account for about 60% of the total supply, but it is unclear whether the production line will be able to operate as planned due to delays in equipment investment due to funding issues.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicts that the new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models will be released next year and will introduce OLED displays, M3 chips and aluminum Magic Keyboards to the iPad product line for the first time.

Considering that OLED displays cannot begin mass production until February, it is unlikely to launch the next-generation iPad Pro in March. It is more likely to be WWDC in June or later, but Apple’s plans are still likely to change. For example, it will be released for a period of time before it is officially launched for sale.

The existing iPad Pro has an LCD panel, and the 12.9-inch model also features mini-LED backlight technology, which improves brightness and contrast.

In contrast, OLED technology will eliminate the need for a backlight on the iPad and can bring higher brightness, contrast and darker blacks, and lower power consumption.

Ross Young said that Apple will use a very thin hybrid OLED display that combines flexible and rigid materials, which may make the next iPad Pro design even thinner and lighter.

Existing iPad Pro models support ProMotion variable refresh rate, allowing adjustment between 24Hz and 120Hz, while new OLED models may further reduce the lower limit of the refresh rate to 10Hz or lower, thus helping to improve battery life (Note: iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro can reach a minimum of 1Hz).

In addition to the two iPad Pros mentioned above, Apple is expected to update the iPad Air, iPad mini and entry-level iPad in 2024, but these models are unlikely to use OLED screens, and most likely they will just upgrade the chips.

The last time Apple updated the iPad Pro series was in October 2022. The main upgrades at that time were the M2 chip, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, the hover function of the second-generation Apple Pencil, and support for ProRes video recording. Some netizens think the upgrade is minor.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro will be launched with a redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory that will make the device more like a laptop.

Last week, Mark Gurman outlined that Apple would redesign the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, making the device more laptop-like thanks to a larger trackpad. Today Mark Gurman revealed more about the accessory’s redesign in the latest issue of the “Power On” newsletter. It is reported that the area around the keyboard will be made of aluminum to provide a sturdier structure, similar to the MacBook’s A-side case, and Apple hopes these changes will make the iPad Pro look more like a laptop.

In addition, the keyboard case still retains the silicone material currently used, and there is only one USB-C interface. Mark Gurman believes that the use of higher-quality materials may cause Apple to increase the price of the accessory by US$299.

The redesigned Magic Keyboard is expected to arrive alongside the next iPad Pro models, and Mark Gurman said the new tablets will bring “fundamental changes” and be the product’s first major update since 2018, using the M3 chip, OLED display, and slightly increased in size to 11 inches and 13 inches.

According to the list recently announced by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), Apple has obtained a technical patent for the “hover” function of the iPad Pro and said that it will be extended to the iPhone and Mac platforms in the future.

Attached hereto is the sketch provided in Apple’s patent, which considers touchscreen #200 to include a mobile phone (iPhone), personal computer (touchscreen Mac), tablet computing device, wearable device (Apple Watch) or any Mobile or non-mobile computing device including touch screens.

Touch Screen #200 integrates Touch Screen #220 which can display images and detect objects from or close to the touch screen surface (such as fingers at #203 and stylus like Apple Pencil at #205).

Apple’s official introduction to the hovering function of Apple Pencil is as follows:

With Apple Pencil hover, you can quickly preview and switch between different tools and controls in supported apps. Before you draw a stroke on the canvas with the drawing tool, you can preview it. You can also sketch, write and adjust with greater precision.

Hold the Apple Pencil up to 12 mm above the iPad display. Here are some examples of what you can do:

Explore the Tool Palette: Hold your Apple Pencil over the Tools Palette, then move it over tools like Pencil, Brush, Eraser, and Color. Tap the tool, color, and option you want to use.

Preview before drawing: Hold the Apple Pencil over the drawing area. You can even tilt your Apple Pencil and change the azimuth (outside angle) to achieve different effects when using some drawing tools. For example, in the Notes app, you can preview the highlighter color, line thickness, and opacity. (Preview tilt and azimuth requires iPadOS 16.4 or later.)

Erase with precision: Select the Eraser tool, then select options such as Pixel Eraser Size or Eraser. Hold the Apple Pencil over the drawing area to preview the effect of the eraser.

According to a report by Korean media outlet The Elec, Apple is working with a number of suppliers to develop custom OLED panels, which will be the first to be equipped on the iPad Pro in 2024 and the first to be equipped on the MacBook Pro in 2026.

The report claims that Apple is working with an Apple screen supplier (most likely Samsung) to develop OLED panels for the 11-inch / 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and 14-inch / 16-inch MacBook Pro. In line with previous rumors, the report says the first iPad with an OLED display will be launched in 2024.

The report that the panel size for iPad Pro is 10.86 inches and 12.9 inches, and for MacBook Pro is 14 inches and 16 inches. The project has been officially established, and South Korean screen mass production companies and related parts and materials companies began to develop panels. A person familiar with the matter said that a variety of panels from 10 inches to 16 inches are under development.

Compared with traditional LCD panels, OLED displays require less power due to their self-emitting pixels, and do not require a backlight, ultimately extending battery life, providing darker blacks, and improving contrast. Apple currently uses screens from display partners such as Samsung and LG, but it is reportedly looking to reduce its reliance on those suppliers.

According to Mark Gurman, the Apple iPad Pro will launch in a matter of days using the M2 processor. From what we could gather from his update, this coming iPad Pro will come in two screen sizes. The two screen sizes to launch are 11-inches and 12.9-inches, both of which will use the Apple M2 processor.

We aren’t certain of the launch date for the coming iPad Pros, but our sources say it will become official on October 27. Previous leaks made us understand that Apple will host a second product launch after the iPhone 14 series, which will bring these iPads to the limelight. From what we understand, this launch will not come with an event, but just a press release and media coverage.

Information readily available has it that the Apple iPad Pro will possibly launch with MagSafe capabilities. Other speculations are that it will bring wireless charging to the iPad product line-up. Mark Gurman also expressed conviction that these coming iPads will also support reverse charging, meaning that they might come with a larger battery than their predecessor.

The coming Apple iPad Pro will launch using the iPadOS 16 software, bringing all features the company made mentioned at the WWDC 22 event. As for performance, there will be a notable upgrade in comparison with the iPad Pros from 2021 which make use of the Apple M1 processor. The M2 processor which is to be in use on the coming iPad Pros is as on-board the newest n13-inch MacBook Pro.
