Gurman said the standard AirPods and AirPods Max will be updated “late next year,” while the AirPods Pro will be updated in 2025 and the AirPods Max will be introduced “around the end of next year. The AirPods Max will be available “around the end of next year”.

Apple will phase out the second- and third-generation regular AirPods in favor of two 'fourth-generation AirPods' at different prices.

According to Gurman, the fourth-generation regular AirPods models all look like a hybrid between the current AirPods and the AirPods Pro, with Apple going for a shorter headphone stem. Higher-end versions of the standard AirPods will feature active noise cancellation similar to the AirPods Pro / Max, and the fit of the headphones in question will be “improved”.

It’s unclear, however, whether Apple plans to add speakers and a USB-C port to the fourth-generation AirPods charging case, similar to the current AirPods Pro.

And on the AirPods Pro front:

The third-generation AirPods Pro will feature a new design and a more efficient chip, and get a 'Hearing Health' feature. Apple is working on having the AirPods Pro collect hearing data to better serve as a hearing aid replacement.

For the AirPods Max, Gurman claims that Apple will introduce more colors for the headphones and replace the USB-C connector.

According to Gurman, the company is apparently working on switching all of its Lightning-based accessories to USB-C. The AirPods Pro will be the first to make the switch to the new interface, and it will launch alongside the iPhone 15 lineup at Apple’s Sept. 13 event. Other AirPods models will follow, as soon as next year.

Unfortunately, Gurman says that the new AirPods Pro won’t offer “any other major new hardware updates”. In the long run, Apple plans to bring health features to its AirPods, including temperature measurement, hearing tests, and more, and those upgrades could come sometime in the future after the entire lineup switches to USB-C.

The AirPods Pro, which is currently on sale, was released in September of last year and supports personalized spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, active noise cancellation with adaptive pass-through mode functionality, 6 hours of listening time on a single charge, and a MagSafe charging case with its own speaker and lanyard holes.

A source said Foxconn will invest more than $200 million (currently about RMB 1.38 billion) in a new AirPods assembly plant in the southern Indian state of Telangana. The factory is expected to start construction in the second half of this year and production will begin as early as the end of 2024.

Foxconn debated for months internally about whether to assemble AirPods due to relatively low profit margins, but they ultimately decided to go ahead with the deal to “strengthen the partnership with Apple,” according to the report.

The decision to set up a factory in India was made at Apple’s request, the sources noted. In addition to the factory in Telangana, Foxconn plans to increase its investment in India to produce smartphones, electric cars and semiconductors.
