At last year’s CES 2023, Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Sony and Honda, was officially unveiled. The two parties named the new brand Afeela and simultaneously displayed Afeela’s first electric concept model.

After a year, the Afeela electric car once again appeared at the CES 2024 booth. This time the official played a “fancy trick” and used a Sony PS5 controller to control the car to the booth.

Of course, this is just an official technology demonstration, and it does not mean that future mass-produced models can also be driven using the PS5 controller. However, it is possible to use the PS5 controller to play games on the car screen.

The car is equipped with a unique Media Bar in the front, which in addition to displaying the car logo, can also display different content, including charging progress. The car will also support L2-level driving assistance in urban driving scenarios.

The car is equipped with an ultra-long integrated central control screen. It will also integrate Sony’s entertainment functions such as film, music, and games, and is equipped with mobile platforms such as Qualcomm Snapdragon digital chassis and Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.

Sony in January this year held the CES big show, announced and Honda cooperation, launched a new car brand called Afeela.

According to Automotive News, the Afeela electric car will be equipped with a Qualcomm chip and have Level 3 self-driving capability.

Note: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Level 5 Standard for Automated Vehicles published in 2013, Level 3 is described as follows:

Limited automatic driving, in the preset road (such as high speed and less crowded city road), the car automatically drive and assume the responsibility of driving safety, the driver still need to take over the car at some time, but there is enough warning time, such as about to enter the road repair section (road work ahead). level 3 will free the driver, that is, no longer responsible for driving safety, do not have to monitor the road condition. Level 3 will free up the driver, who will no longer be responsible for safety and will not have to monitor road conditions.

Ed Kim, principal analyst at AutoPacific, highlighted Qualcomm’s key role in the Afeela project, saying:

Honda provided the platform, Sony had the idea, but it was really Qualcomm that powered all of these things.

The Afeela EV is not only the epitome of technological advancement, but also an aesthetic marvel. The interior screen will feature graphics developed using the Unreal Engine, the same display found in the GMC Hummer EV.

The car, for which full technical specifications have not yet been made public, will have a streamlined exterior design with curves and a cleaner overall design with electronic exterior mirrors instead of door handles and conventional mirrors, and a wheelbase of 3,000 millimetres.

The car will carry a total of 45 cameras and sensors inside and out, and inside it will feature an extra-long unibody centre console, as well as integrated entertainment features such as Sony’s film, music and gaming, and mobile platforms such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon digital chassis, as well as Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.
