Sony-Honda collaboration AFEELA trial car debuts

Sony Honda Mobility, a company that invested 50% in Sony and Honda each, unveiled the brand’s first model “AFEELA” in Japan for the first time.

According to a report in Nikkei News today, Izumi Kawanishi, president of Sony Honda Mobility, said at a press conference that other companies and developers can easily develop the various software running on the AFEELA, and that the company’s goal is to establish a business model that makes money through ongoing fee-based revenues in addition to the sale of vehicles, and that the company expects to make money through the “Acceptance of Content Purchase” and “Driver’s License Purchase”. The company aims to establish a business model that generates money through ongoing fee-based revenue in addition to the sale of vehicles and hopes to generate more revenue through “content purchase acceptance” and “driver assistance applications. President Izumi Kawanishi said that the value of the hardware may be high initially, but the value of the services and software will continue to increase.

The profit model involved here can be called a “software-defined vehicle” (SDV), which refers to the sale of vehicles that can also provide services that can continue to profit.

The car was unveiled at CES 2023 earlier this year, adopting a simple streamlined design and a number of currently popular appearance or functional configurations for smart connected cars, such as doorless handles, electronic mirrors, and LiDAR. The new car will be available for pre-order online in 2025 and will be manufactured at Honda’s North American plant, with deliveries in North America and Japan starting in the spring and second half of 2026, respectively.

The car is 4895mm long, 1900mm wide, 1460mm high, with a wheelbase of 3000mm, and adopts all-wheel drive. The front face is equipped with a unique “Media Bar”, which not only displays the car logo but also shows different contents, including the charging progress.

The car will feature a total of 45 cameras and sensors inside and out, an extra-long one-piece center screen inside, Sony’s movie, music, games, and other entertainment features, and mobile platforms such as Qualcomm Snapdragon Digital Chassis and Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.

In addition, the car will be equipped with a Qualcomm chip and will have L3-level autonomous driving capabilities.
