Sony PlayStation 5 sales in Japan exceeded the milestone of 2 million units.
According to Famitsu sales data, as of October 23, 2022, Sony PlayStation 5 has sold 2,027,783 units in Japan, including 1,749,737 PS5 optical drive consoles and 278,046 PS5 digital consoles.
It took Sony PlayStation 5 101 weeks to reach this number or about two years, compared to 90 weeks for the PlayStation 4 and 73 weeks for the PlayStation 3.
However, Sony PlayStation 5 suffered from supply shortages and other problems after the launch, and the price is relatively high, which are factors that affect the sales figures. In addition, the popularity of Nintendo Switch in Japan has also affected Sony PlayStation 5 to some extent, as the former has sold 25 million units in Japan.
Sony’s shift in development focus from targeting Japanese gamers to Western markets may also be seen as a factor in the slowing growth of the PlayStation 5. Sony PlayStation 5 sales in the U.K. reached 2 million in 98 weeks, the same time as the PlayStation 3, compared to other regions. According to Sony, worldwide PS5 shipments reached 21.7 million units in the three months ending June 30, 2022.
