Seagate confirmed this week that it will launch the world’s first mechanical hard drive above 30TB using heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology in the third quarter of 2023, and promises to push it up to 50TB in the next few years.

Seagate said that it will launch 22 TB and 24 TB mechanical hard drives using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology in the near future, but the official still has not announced when it will be officially released.

Seagate CEO Dave Mosley expressed the following: “We have met or exceeded all product development milestones and reliability indicators, and we will ship pre-orders to major cloud customers in the next few weeks. authentication unit”.

The material of the HAMR technology hard disk platter has changed, using alloy materials such as iron and platinum, instead of the current mainstream hard disk platters being alloys of cobalt, platinum, chromium and other elements. The biggest feature of HAMR technology is that a laser emitting component is integrated inside the hard disk, and a corresponding small laser beam is provided to irradiate the writing point in the form of near-field light, thereby heating the disk particles to assist the magnetic head in writing.
