Samsung to produce 27-inch QD-OLED displays, target supply to Apple

The competition is heating up, at least when it comes to who will be first to launch a 27-inch OLED-type panel, with Samsung now considering making its own 27-inch OLED-type panel, following rumors that LG is considering its own model of the same size. These details were provided by UBI Research, via Elec

According to the report, Samsung initially intended to release a 27-inch RGB OLED-based panel, but the company has yet to meet its quality requirements in terms of product development, and Samsung then allegedly opted for QD-OLED, which the article says is more profitable for Samsung.

That said, it appears that Samsung will try to win Apple as its first customer for the panels, rather than launching them under its own brand. The panels will reportedly be produced in a brand new factory using Gen 8 OLED substrates, meaning they will be made in a very technologically sophisticated facility.

The 27-inch also appears to be the smallest size QD-OLED panel we can expect, at least for now, with the smaller size panels using what are called two-stack tandem RGB OLED panels. These will be used in notebooks and other smaller devices, and Samsung is currently producing single-layer RGB OLED panels for cell phones.
