Samsung is developing its own mobile GPU, IP based on AMD RDNA architecture

Samsung developed the Xclipse 920 GPU for the Exynos 2200 with support for ray tracing technology, although the results were not as good as expected and capacity was severely limited, but the latest news now suggests that they are accelerating the development of a new generation of SoCs as well as custom GPUs.

According to Revegnus, Samsung is developing its exclusive GPU with the help of RDNA architecture and may need AMD’s help to form an IP, which we will see in three years. Samsung has been relying on ARM’s Mali GPU design until the Exynos 2100, and that could all change as a result.

Of course, this approach is not new, as both Apple and Qualcomm are doing so, and most of the common MediaTek Tiangui and Heisi Kirin chips are based on Arm’s public version of the Mali architecture (the latest generation flagship model is named Immortalis-G715).

The Samsung Exynos 2200 uses the Xclipse GPU based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture, which is a very special hybrid graphics processor between console and mobile GPUs. The “Xclipse” is a combination of the “X” for Exynos and the “eclipse”.

Based on the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 architecture, Xclipse inherits advanced graphics features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) that were previously available only on PCs, laptops and game consoles. In addition, the Xclipse GPU is equipped with a variety of technologies such as Advanced Multi-IP Governor (AMIGO) to improve overall performance and efficiency.

According to previous rumors, the Tensor G3 used in Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be based on the Exynos 2300 being developed by Samsung, which includes the Xclipse 930 GPU, and there were also rumors that Samsung was looking to develop a custom CPU core, although the company later denied the claims.
