Samsung Galaxy S23 / Ultra to be equipped with a customized version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip

Samsung Galaxy S23 series will be released on February 1 and is expected to be equipped with the latest Snapdragon chip of the special version.

For years, Samsung’s flagship smartphones have been divided into two camps. In the U.S. and other major markets, Samsung Galaxy devices run Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. But in other markets, including Europe, they have long used Samsung’s own Exynos chips, which have a performance gap.

Samsung and Qualcomm signed a deal last year that first publicly hinted that rumors about the Galaxy S23 series using Snapdragon chips globally were true, and there was more evidence at the time that some Galaxy S23 models were found to use a custom version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip with higher frequencies.

According to a document viewed by 9to5Google, the customized Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 used in Samsung Galaxy S23 devices will be called the “Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy”. The chip will have a CPU frequency of up to 3.36GHz, while Qualcomm’s main version of the chip usually runs its main X3 core at 3.2GHz.

Samsung’s customized version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to carry essentially the same feature set as the chip used in the OnePlus 11 and other Android flagship devices but optimized for Samsung phones. There were also rumors that the chip was being made by Samsung’s foundry rather than TSMC, but the original tipster of that information has since retracted that claim.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is now available for pre-order for up to an additional $100 on pre-orders.
