Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra performance test: high-frequency version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 GPU performs well

0

This year Samsung Galaxy S23 series not only all the Snapdragon processors, no longer the Exynos version, but also the high-frequency version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor, the frequency from the standard version of 3.2GHz to 3.36GHz, so how is its performance?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor for the Galaxy S23 series has 1 Cortex-X3, 2 Cortex-A715, 2 Cortex-A710 and 3 Cortex-A510 cores, but the Cortex-X3 core is clocked at 3.36 GHz instead of the standard version of 3.2 GHz. The Adreno 740 GPU frequency has also been increased, from 680 MHz to 719 MHz.

Gsmarena has conducted a score test on Galaxy S23 Ultra and the results are as follows.

Geekbench 5 CPU test results show that the Galaxy S23 Ultra lags behind the A16-powered iPhone 14 Pro Max in both multi-core and single-core scores, and surprisingly, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is ahead of the Red Devil 8 Pro in the single-core test, while trailing the latter in the multi-core score. Gsmarena explained this by saying that the S23 Ultra did not use the large Cortex-X3 core in the multi-core test.

In the AnTuTu test, the Galaxy S23 Ultra lags behind the Red Devil 8 Pro, but the latter is a gaming phone with a screen resolution of just 1080p+ and less graphics math required – after all, AnTuTu is a comprehensive test. The results also show that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy is much faster than the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, and even faster than the A16 Bionic inside the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When it comes to GPU-intensive tasks, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy has a clear advantage. The Galaxy S23 Ultra came out ahead in almost all of the Offscreen tests, only falling short when challenged by lower resolution phones in the Onscreen test.

Overall, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is 30-35% faster than the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the CPU test and about 30% faster in the AnTuTu 9 combined benchmark test. In GFX Bench and 3DMark GPU tests, the Galaxy S23 Ultra delivers up to 2x performance boost and 80-90% in most cases.
