Strategy Analytics released a report saying that global smartphone shipments in Q3 2022 fell 9% year-on-year to 297 million units.

According to the report, Samsung topped the global smartphone market with a 22 percent market share in Q3 2022. Apple ranked second with 16 percent market share, its highest level in Q3 in the past 12 years. Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus) and Vivo remain in the top five.

Strategy Analytics said this was the fifth consecutive quarter of annual decline in smartphone sales. Inventory adjustments and geopolitical issues had a negative impact on the smartphone market in Q3 this year. At the same time, the unfavorable economic environment continues to erode consumer demand for smartphones and other non-essential items.

The report notes that in Q3 2022, Apple shipped 49 million iPhones worldwide, up 6 percent year-over-year, representing 16 percent of the global market share. This is Apple’s highest Q3 market share in the past 12 years while leading Chinese brands have been dragged down by their sluggish performance in domestic and international markets. Apple had a good quarter, led by the newly announced iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, while demand for iPhone 14 remained mixed.

In Q3 2022, in addition to the top five, Transn, Honor, Realme, Lenovo-Motorola and Huawei rounded out the top 10. Among them, Huawei achieved annual growth in smartphone shipments this quarter, driven by healthy demand for 4G smartphones in China, such as the Nova 10 series, P50 and Mate 50.

The Strategy Analytics expects global smartphone shipments to decline 9 percent to 10 percent year-over-year for the full year 2022.
