Another sealed original iPhone has fetched a premium, this time, for one that included rare packaging with a unique “Lucky You” upside-down sticker. The first-generation iPhone (model A1203) sold for a whopping $40,320 at Wright’s auction on its website.
The bidding window that emerged yesterday lasted about 12 hours, with bids initially estimated to be between $40,000 and $60,000. However, the rare iPhone stayed at a lower price point, despite selling for the equivalent of a Tesla Model 3. Until now, the most expensive iPhone 1 auction was recorded at $63,000, which occurred earlier this year.
Steve Jobs released the original iPhone in 2007, priced at $599 for the 8GB model. Therefore, the auction price is about 67 times the original price of the iPhone. However, the reduced auction amount may be justified as the outer packaging is not perfect as it has a small tear in the plastic wrap. Although an X-ray scan uploaded to the website shows that all accessories are intact inside the retail box.
The auctioned iPhone was provided by Donald Gajadar of Fox-White Art and Antique Appraisals, who called it “Willy Wonka, ’24K’ when one of their clients handed him the unopened device Golden ticket”.
