OmniVision Group released a 1.2-micron pixel high-resolution image sensor OV50H for smartphone rear cameras at CES 2023. It adopts a 1/1.3-inch optical format and supports multiple HDR mode and high frame rates.

The OV50H is a 50-megapixel image sensor with dual conversion gain (DCG) technology, 1.2-micron pixels, and a 1/1.3-inch optical format, designed for high-end smartphone rear cameras.

OV50H adopts OmniVision’s PureCel Plus-S chip stacking technology, and H / V QPD autofocus technology supports 12.5 million pixels (120 frames per second) and high dynamic range (HDR) (60 frames per second), is OmniVision The group’s first sensor with a horizontal/vertical (H/V) quad-phase detection (QPD) function.

QPD enables 2×2 phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) across the sensor’s entire image array, while H/V mode ensures 100% coverage in the same frame both horizontally and vertically. This feature improves distance calculations, enables faster autofocus, and improves low-light performance.

Key highlights of the OV50H:

4-in-1 pixel binning for 12.5MP video and preview with 2.4-micron equivalent sensitivity for excellent low-light performance; supports frame rates up to 120 fps with 4x low-light sensitivity

8K video with on-chip pixel restoration algorithm; 4K video + electronic image stabilization, including 120 fps (linear) and 60 fps (HDR)

DCG HDR adopts on-chip combination and supports interlaced HDR, which can flexibly select different HDR modes according to the scene; supports interlaced HDR in crop zoom mode

Capable of 12.5MP (30 fps HDR) and 100+dB dynamic range when using DCG + Ultra Short Exposure Interleaved HDR or Triple Exposure Interleaved HDR

Support H/V QPD for excellent autofocus function

Full 50MP Bayer output and 2x cropped zoom capability

The OmniVision OV50H image sensor will be sampled in April 2023.
