NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 is a hefty monster graphics card that generates a lot of heat when running, which can damage cable connections in certain situations. In an update to its support page, NVIDIA said the issue appears to stem from the power connector not being fully seated in the card.

According to the company, about 50 cases of this have been recorded in various locations.” We are actively investigating these reports and “until the investigation is complete, card owners are advised to ensure that the cable connecting the power supply is securely fastened before plugging the card into the motherboard.

Several owners of GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards began sharing photos of burned cable connections on NVIDIA subreddit just weeks after the card was introduced. 12 VHPWR adapters are cables that supply power directly from the computer power supply to the graphics card, and because of the enormous amount of power required to run the RTX 4090, a correspondingly large amount of heat can build up, especially when the cable is bent at right angles in order to fit the massive card into a PC chassis, the situation is even more pronounced.

NVIDIA says it is working with partners to replace these cards that have burned up their power connectors.

The GeForce RTX 4090, which came out last month for a whopping $1,600, is one of the best graphics cards currently available for PCs, especially for those who want to play games in 4K.
