HMD Global is making a big push for sustainability in its IFA 2022 announcement with the release of new devices made from recyclable materials, and the company is also introducing a new recycling subscription to extend the usable life of devices and reduce the number of e-waste people generate when they upgrade.

The metal frames of the latest X-Series models are made of 100% recycled aluminum, while the plastic backs are made of 65% recycled material. Even the retail box is made up of 70% recycled paper (all FSC certified). And, of course, there is no charger included in the box, making it smaller and easier to transport.

The Nokia X30 5G features a 6.43-inch AMOLED display, which is an FHD+ panel (20:9) with a 90Hz refresh rate and a typical brightness of 450 nits (700 nits peak). The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. The rear camera is also protected by Corning Gorilla DX+ glass. It has a 50MP primary camera (1/1.57″, 1.0µm native pixels, 4-in-1 pixel support) with OIS and a 13MP ultra-wide angle camera (123°, 1/3.06″). The selfie camera has a 16-megapixel sensor (1.0μm native pixels, also supports 4-in-1 pixels). The Nokia X30 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 695, not very powerful but a very efficient 6nm chipset, available in two configurations: 6/128GB and 8/256GB (UFS 2.2 storage).

The X30 comes with what HMD calls the “3-3-3 Promise”, 3 OS updates, 3 years of security patches and 3 years of extended warranty. The phone was launched with Android 12, so it should be able to install up to Android 15. In addition, all personal data is stored on servers located in Hamina, Finland, where it is subject to strict EU regulations. The Nokia X30 5G has an under-display fingerprint reader and face unlock feature. The phone uses a 4200mAh battery with 33W of charging power (USB-PD 3.0 PPS). The battery promises to retain most of its capacity after 800 cycles. In terms of connectivity, there is USB-C 2.0, 5G (sub-6GHz) with dual nano SIMs (one eSIM available), Wi-Fi 6(ax), Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and an IR emitter. The phone’s body is rated IP67 with dust and water resistance.

The Nokia X30 5G is available worldwide from today at a base price of €530 and is available in Cloud Blue or Ice White.

The Nokia G60 5G is another G-series model with 5G capabilities. This model also takes recycling seriously, with 100% of the plastic back and 60% of the plastic frame being recycled. It also comes with the “3-3-3″ promise of 3 OS updates, 3 years of security patches and an extended 3-year warranty. The Nokia G60 5G also features the Snapdragon 695 chipset, but with a more modest memory configuration that includes 4GB/64GB, 4GB/128GB and 6GB/128GB (UFS 2.2). A microSD slot is available for those who need more storage space. The phone is bigger thanks to a 6.58-inch FHD+ display with an LCD and a higher refresh rate of 120Hz. however, it’s not as bright (400 nits typical, 500 nits peak) and only gets older Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Also, the front camera is 8MP, 0.64μm pixel, 4 in 1 pixel) and the front camera is mounted in a notch. The rear camera has a 50MP primary sensor (1/2.67″, 0.64µm pixels, 4-in-1 pixel support), lacks OIS, and the ultra-wide camera has a 5MP sensor (1/5”), plus a depth sensor as well. The Nokia G60 5G has a slightly larger battery at 4500mAh (also rated at 800 cycles), but it charges slowly with a maximum power of 20W (USB-PD 3.0). In some markets, the model will come with a 20W charger.

The Nokia G60 5G comes in ice grey and solid black. this 5G phone has a hybrid dual SIM slot where you can have two nanoSIMs or a SIM+microSD card. eSIM is still an option, so you can have both extra storage and one phone with two numbers. There’s also USB-C 2.0, Wi-Fi 6(ax), Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC. the phone only has an IP52 rating, which means it can survive drips, but can’t be submerged like the X30. The Nokia G60 5G is also available in stores today starting at €320.
