Nikkei: Nintendo will not launch new hardware before March 2023

The Nikkei News reported yesterday that Nintendo will not release new hardware this fiscal year. This means that Nintendo will not launch a new Switch until March 31, 2023.

In this regard, Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki said it is unclear whether the report is Nikkei News’ own speculation or its interview with Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa’s own words. So it is not certain that the new Nintendo machine will definitely be launched after March 2023.

It’s worth noting that the rest of the Nikkei News article quotes Shuntaro Furukawa as saying, “Normally, we would stock up on inventory in the summer to prepare for the sales rush at the end of the year. But this summer we weren’t able to stock up enough product inventory”.

In addition, well-known tipster @Moore’s Law is Dead said yesterday that a development kit for the next-generation Nintendo Switch has been released, so Nintendo could release a new model within six months.

Nintendo yesterday released its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2022-2023. The report showed that Nintendo’s sales for the quarter were 307.46 billion yen (about 15.711 billion yuan) and profits were 10.147 billion yen (about 5.194 billion yuan).

In terms of consoles, Nintendo Switch sales reached a total of 11.108 million units. Hardware sales for the quarter totaled 3.43 million units, with 1.32 million Switch units, 1.52 million Switch OLED units and 590,000 Switch Lite units.
