Today OpenAI released its new GPT-4 large language model, followed by Microsoft’s official announcement that Bing Chat has previously been upgraded to use OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology.

Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate vice president and chief marketing officer for consumers, confirmed that the Bing Chat chatbot AI is already running on GPT-4, the latest version of GPT-4 on which ChatGPT is based and which was developed by OpenAI. The news was further confirmed by a post on the Microsoft Bing blog site.

Microsoft says that if users have used the new Bing Preview at any time in the last five weeks, they have already experienced an earlier version of this powerful model. Bing will benefit from these improvements as OpenAI makes updates to GPT-4 and beyond (Bing has surpassed 100 million daily active users). In addition to updates based on community feedback, users have the most comprehensive Copilot capabilities available.

If users want to experience GPT-4, they should sign up for the new Bing preview version. Once inside, they will be able to search, answer, chat and create on Bing.com using the new Bing.

Previously, Microsoft simply said that Bing Chat was using its own Prometheus model and a “new next-generation OpenAI large language model.

Microsoft now says that Bing Chat’s GPT-4 has been “customized for search. No other information is available yet, including when Microsoft will add the GPT-4 image-text combination feature announced by OpenAI today.
