Microsoft Corp. has threatened to cut off access to its competitors’ Internet search data if they don’t stop using it as the basis for their own artificial intelligence chat products, according to a report.

The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said the company has told at least two customers that using its Bing search index — an Internet map that can be scanned in real time — to provide data for their artificial intelligence chat tools violates the terms of their contracts . The report also said Microsoft may also terminate the license to provide access to its search index.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Microsoft said in February that it was using artificial intelligence to improve its Bing search engine and Edge Web browser, signaling the company’s ambition to regain leadership in a consumer technology market it has fallen behind.
