Microsoft introduces Avatars for Teams teleconferencing app

Microsoft today announced the availability of Avatars for the Microsoft Teams app in a public preview.

Users can create 3D animated models that can be displayed as avatars instead of appearing in front of the camera during video calls or meetings.

Microsoft opened a private beta test in October 2022, inviting only select users to test the avatar feature. Microsoft then continued to improve the model’s hair, lighting and other details based on user feedback, making it look more realistic.

Microsoft also added accessories such as closet and headgear to more accurately restore the user’s portrait. These 3D avatars are powered by the Mesh Mixed Reality (MR) platform.
