The new MediaTek Dimensity 1080 5G processor is coming into the midrange smartphone industry to help improve device performance. This new processor is succeeding the Dimensity 920 5gG SoC that became official in the month of August 2021. Just like its predecessor, the Dimensity 1080 uses the TSMC N6 6nm fabrication process.

The upgrades it brings in comparison with the Dimensity 920 are obvious on paper until it makes their way to smartphones. When it comes to performance, the new MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor makes use of an octa-core CPU and an Arm Mali G68 GPU. Making up its CPU are two ARM Cortex-A78 cores with 2.6GHz frequencies and four Cortex-A55 cores with 2GHz frequencies. This is an upgrade from the cores present on the last year’s Dimensity 920 SoC, the new processor also steps up the memory type to an LPDDR5 RAM.

Other improvements are with the Max camera ISP which supports a 200MP sensor on the new Dimensity processor. The video recording capability on the new MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor continues with the 4K resolution support present on the Dimensity 920. But this processor lacks in terms of any core gaming feature like we see on other Dimensity processors.

Devices that will make use of this new processor will start shipping before the end of this year. Once they begin to ship, the actual performance of this midrange processor on everyday usage will become available. To get a better understanding of the performance of this processor, we will need to wait for real-world testing.
