LG launches 97-inch OLED EX TV that claims to create movie-like, speakerless vibrating sound

0

LG Display has announced a TV with a 97-inch OLED EX panel that can generate 5.1 audio by vibrating without the help of built-in speakers. The massive display features LG’s CSO (cinema-grade OLED) technology, previously seen on devices such as the bendable 48-inch OLED panel.

CSO uses a thin-film generator applied to the back of the panel to vibrate the display, allowing audio to be generated directly from the OLED without the need for additional speakers. LG Display claims that the 5.1-channel system will provide “cinematic immersion,” a bold claim since all the sound will come from the TV itself, not from surround-sound speakers placed behind the viewer.

While we can’t prematurely vouch for the quality of sound produced by the CSO inside LG panels before the product appears on the market, we found the technology’s performance on the LG G8 smartphone using it in 2019 to be actually lackluster, though things may have improved since then.

The Sony Bravia AG9 is also an OLED TV with similar vibrating panel technology, which experts say is “one of the best-sounding TVs on the market,” although not quite the same as “cinematic immersion,” but the fact that friendly companies are actively experimenting with the new technology and doing well wouldn’t be bad news for LG.

LG Display’s 97-inch panel uses the same OLED EX technology as LG’s and other companies’ latest flagship OLED TVs to create brighter, more accurate images. announced a 97-inch OLED TV in January 2022 without the vibrating sound feature.

According to FlatpanelsHD, LG Electronics’ 97-inch OLED EX TV should start zeroing in on a price tag of about $25,000 later this year
