iPadOS 17.5 code confirms next-generation Apple iPad Pro will use OLED screen

It is reported that the next generation iPad Pro will use an OLED display for the first time. This news is supported by the first beta code of iPadOS 17.5. Digging through the code, 9to5Mac discovered four unreleased iPad models, with information explicitly mentioning the new display technology.

It is noticed that the beta code contains display firmware information for four new iPads: iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5 and iPad16,6. It is speculated that these four models should belong to the next generation iPad Pro, which will be available in 11-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes and support Wi-Fi and cellular network connections.

Notably, the beta firmware information suggests that these iPads will feature OLED displays, while hinting at possible differences between vendors for different screen sizes. A previous report from display analysis agency DSCC also mentioned that the release of the new iPad may be delayed due to mass production issues with the new display. According to reports, LG will provide OLED panels for all 12.9-inch iPad Pros, while the 11-inch version may have screens provided by both LG and Samsung.

In addition to the new iPad Pro, the much-anticipated Apple Pencil will also receive an update. Earlier this month, 9to5Mac discovered a new gesture operation for Apple Pencil – squeeze – in the iPadOS 17.5 beta code. And now, they’ve found more evidence pointing to the existence of a new generation of Apple Pencil. In addition to the Squeeze gesture, LongSqueeze and DoubleSqueeze gestures were also spotted in the beta. Since the current Apple Pencil 2 only supports two taps and does not have the function of sensing pressure, it is speculated that these new gestures are specially designed for the upcoming new Apple Pencil. At the same time, the iPadOS 17.4 beta code also hints that the new Apple Pencil will support the “Find” function.

Bloomberg previously reported that Apple plans to release new iPad Pro and iPad Air, as well as redesigned Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 3 in the second week of May.
