iOS 17 Apple Maps can download regional data packages to support offline navigation

Apple has released the first developer preview update for iOS 17, which enhances lock screen personalization and other system-level improvements, as well as optimizing native apps like Wallet and Photos. This article introduces the improvements brought by the Apple Maps app.

The most intuitive change for users using the Apple Maps app for iOS 17 is the ability to download region-specific data packs for use offline.

Once users download the packets locally, they can navigate using routes for driving, walking, biking and public transportation, in addition to seeing estimated arrival times and other information.

Apple says Apple Watch will also be able to use Apple Maps offline after it’s paired with the iPhone.

In addition to the ability to download offline data packs and support navigation, Apple Maps also includes the ability to see the availability of nearby charging stations in real time (currently, this should be limited to the U.S.).
